If Haynes is really interested in understanding those of us between the East and West coasts he would skip "What's the Matter With Kansas" and read some conservative books, such as "Liberal Fascism", "The Road to Serfdom", "The Forgotten Man", and especially "The Secret Knowledge". Heck, how about listening to Rush Limbaugh for a week? If he can't fathom this, then he really doesn't want to step outside of is comfort zone and understand these mysterious creatures that inhabit flyover country.

“It’s sort of about the great middle of this country and their sort (SIC) of suspicions about government.."

Great to know that Todd finds "suspicion of government" odd. What's The Matter With Hollywood?

You know the difference between an artist and a hack? An artist doesn't even think about is "target audience."

This is a perfect example of why people hate Hollywood. In his bold endeavor to “take an in-depth look at the values and opinions of Middle America,” Haynes sounds like he’s come straight from Central Casting for a project that needs a stereotypically smug Hollywood liberal planning a safari of sorts into the unknown wilds of flyover country. He’s almost clinical and academic about it all, and certainly a little paranoid: “There’s interesting reasons why people feel the way they do, outside of the coasts and outside of the clear liberal orthodoxy, and that interests me. It’s been too effective, that allegiance [to conservative politics], for too many years, and I’m curious about it. So we’re kind of getting inside that process.” Too effective? Too many years? What’s he going to do – film it into his submission?
But, he’s bound and determined to test the contaminated waters -- despite the rumors of guns and religion – by stepping “out of your comfort zone and even your cynical zone, and open yourself up to what other people might experience and why they do so.” How noble. What bothers me, however, is that Haynes thinks he’s making this grand “effort to avoid any sort of ideas or storytelling that comes from a place of bias or preconceived notion.” Might be a little too late for that.

"Celebrities -- is there anything they don't know?"
