Timothée Chalamet Confirms Greta Gerwig Wanted Him To Cameo In ‘Barbie’: “There Was An Idea”

While it may not be the overall best movie of 2023, “Barbie” certainly is the movie of 2023. It was the year’s highest-grossing film, brought the Kenergy, and is a profoundly rewatchable film. That’s something some of the year’s other great cinematic achievements (“Killers Of The Flower Moon“) can’t say.

But “Barbie” was missing something; or rather, someone: Greta Gerwig regular Timothée Chalamet. And while it’s already known that Gerwig wanted Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan in her film despite scheduling conflicts, ET reports that the actor talked about what his cameo may have been on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” In short, Chalamet still doesn’t know exactly what Gerwig had in mind for him, but they had serious talks about him showing up briefly.

“There was an idea for Saoirse Ronan and I to do a cameo in it,” Chalamet told Jimmy Fallon. “I don’t know what the cameo would have been. I think it would have been one of the rejected Kens or Barbies. Not Allan, but something. Maybe there was a reject French one.” And when Fallon asked Chalamet if he met with Gerwig about the cameo, the actor confirmed it. “I did, because when I finished “Wonka” the “Barbie” set had been built…The set is insane. It’s amazing.”

Gerwig talked about her wish to have Ronan and Chalamet cameo as “Barbie” took over the box office late last summer. ““I tried to get them both in it. They both couldn’t do it,” Gerwig said. “Although Timothée did come by the set and then said, ‘I should have been in this,’ And I was like, ‘I know! Why aren’t you in this?’” Gerwig had “specialty cameos” in mind for the two stars, similar to how Dua Lipa and John Cena appears as Mermaid Barbie and Ken-maid, but “both of them couldn’t do it and I was so annoyed.” “But I love them so much,” Gerwig continued, but it felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom.”

Well, maybe the Gerwig-Chalamet-Ronan “family” will reunite on “Barbie 2,” if that ever happens. But nobody, including “Barbie” star Margot Robbie, thinks that should happen. Alas, at least we have “Barbie,” and isn’t that kenough?
