I think the whole \'everything is a kid-friendly remake/reboot/sequel!\' schtick is based around the summer schedule. Truth be told, there are plenty of adult-friendly and/or original projects that come out during the would-be slow months (Jan-March/Aug-Oct), they just don\'t get the press of the superhero pictures and what-not. After a summer where everyone was decrying the end of movies, no one seemed to notice a flood of mid-budget, adult-centric pictures that (generally) received solid reviews and (generally) succeeded at the box office. In just September and October, we had The Town, Easy A, Let Me In, Social Network, and Red. As long as studios remember to keep the budgets under $50 million, making adult genre films will continue to remain profitable. So let\'s not lose our heads as we enter another kid-centric summer. Just hold our breath until September.

Great article, hope some studio execs are reading it! What\'s really gotten squeezed out of the equation are the intelligent, adult dramas that the mini-majors and Indiewood studios used to make. So there are just fewer places and fewer ways for guys who came up through the indie route like the Coens, Aronofsky, Russell to get films made.

AMAZING POST SIR!!

Love the facts, the data, and your input

A job well done. I love reading about the \"buisness side\" of the movie industry, please write more articles like this

Oh & I agree with everything you are saying.

I feel as though there just needs to be more creative projects that somehow are aimed at both young people & adults
- fuck these big budget popcorn no plot story line films

Yeah, it\'ll be interesting to see if Disney goes with a sequel (that whole piece reads like it was waiting for a confirmation from Disney that never came). I\'m not so sure anyone cares enough for one, but as that article notes there are a lot of arms tied into that franchise so who knows.

But if they do you can bet that it will arrive on a much smaller budget at the very least.

Very well written, extremely interesting stuff.
As a 21 year old I have been a fan of the Coen bros. Darren Aronofsky and films of that ilk for years. I guess I would be classed as a \'young\'ish movie-goer but I appreciate films like There Will Be Blood. Those types of films leave a lasting impression.
The price of cinema stops me going to see most films. I did not go and see True Grit as it was released late feb in the uk, I imported a blu-ray from America before then.
I am of the opinion that 2d film is more enjoyable. The only film I will see in 3D in the near future is the next instalment of Avatar.

Hi, I\'m a 12-25 year old \'boy\' (really? still calling people boys at 25?) most of my friends are 12-25, and they all love the kind of films you\'re pointing too as aimed at other people. I know demographics are useful to people, but you can probably also understand that most of us don\'t appreciate ours being used as a byword for \'immature idiot\'.

If I might suggest an alternative to your hypothesis, it\'s equally possibly that 12-25 year old males are still dominating the cinema going market, but they are demanding more from the films they go to see.

After all, the current crop of 12-25s grew up with the internet and the DVD market we can get any kind of \'popcorn entertainment\' at home, cinema trips are reserved for more thoughtful fare. It\'s worth noting that many of the films you cite in your article have an action or thriller component, but also aim a little more highbrow than dumb blockbusters, this \'thoughtful spectacle\' kind of movie is enormously popular with people in my age group, Christopher Nolan (who you mention above) being the most acclaimed purveyor of them.

You could point to the success of higher ratings movies as evidence against this, but I would point out that fully half of the 12-25 (an absurdly large demographic) market is old enough to get into whatever movies they want. Meanwhile movies that are traditionally aimed at the same crowd such as comic book movies have gotten more complex. The Dark Knight and Iron Man drew in acclaimed actors and directors and attempted more character based approaches and were highly successful.

Doesn\'t the fact that the Coen Brothers\' biggest hit of their careers is a remake of an existing and iconic movie kind of invalidate the point this article is trying to make?
Most of that older audience had already seen and didn\'t need another True Grit.

Plus Tron Legacy was a sequel to a 28 year old movie that bombed- hardly a safe bet. The fact that they were able to make it profitable and get anyone under the age of 25 interested in it is a pretty impressive accomplishment.

In reality True Grit was a safe, cautious move on the part of normally ambitious filmmakers and Tron Legacy was an ambitious choice for a company that typically is only concerned with the bottom line.

Don\'t get all defensive. You know what they say about our demographic is at least partly true. Yes, there are more thoughtful 21-25 year olds out there, but lets face it, there are plenty who are not. I get what the author of this piece. The best thing we can do is to continue to support great cinema.

Although i know way too many older people who insist on waiting til a new movie comes out on dvd before they see it. They could be part of the problem as well.

Old people however will apparently see anything. When i saw black swan, there were way too many old people in the seats. Kinda uncomfortable. Hope they werent too shocked by what they saw

How are we growing up? Look at the popular and buzzworthy movies of the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. They make our \"cool,\" \"adult\" films look like Saved by the Bell.

TV drama is the only thing clearly getting better and more mature.

Very good piece here.

I only go to the cinema to see a film IF
a) They market the film well and garner my interest
b) If The Critics are up in arms about it
c) If someone else is happily paying for me LOL

The point is, Cinema has always appealed to males, because they are the audience that would sit around and watch a story pan out. Females are mostly out shopping or doing other things. Not saying they don\'t go to the cinema, its because there aren\'t that many films that appeal to a female audience.

Summer is usually the time where films appealed to kids/teens/families come out and being summer (No school) they will make more money, where as a weekend in October would make half the money during the fact most young audience members are at school or college.

I don\'t think \"Cinema Is Dying\" just because every summer, we get films that play to a audience that knows less about the way hollywood works and have short attention spams, but those same people would look at The Social Network and get bored by it. So in a way, everyone wins.

What i hope doesn\'t happen is the internet swallowing up everything and we resort to using the internet for everything come 2100. Thats a future i would rather skip.
