It was in 1994 that Tim Burton ended his perfect batting average and Burton's been spotty ever since. After Ed Wood, he made Mars Attacks (uneven), Sleepy Hollow (good October movie), Planet of the Apes (Abe Lincoln?), Big Fish (great to see him making a movie in daylight, great feel-good movie), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (if you hate the original you'll like it, I don't), Corpse Bride (this is when it started sinking in), Sweeney Todd (not bad, but the romantic subplot kinda hurts it, very gothic and corny, but altogether this one I think is actually underrated, with all the awards hooplah going for it, blame it on Hot Topic), and then, alas, Alice in Wonderland.

He's made some good films since but Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Batman Returns, and Ed Wood (IN A ROW), have nothing to do with most of the above mentioned films.

is godard supposed to be the benchmark of consistency? The writers of The Playlist have good reason to nitpick him, anon #1. He started so strong, and then delivered with Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, and Ed Wood. Those films fully explore his obsession with outsiders with wit, intelligence, visual wonder, and heart. After that he's been losing each of those one by one finally releasing the awful Alice in Wonderland. Just fucking awful.
