Wow, Hardy is such a golden boy and critic's favorite, it's refreshing to read something that's actually critical. This does sound very retro, I can see it in the 70's with Al Pacino or Treat Williams and Gene Hackman.

Given that Child44 has been pushed back, Hardy does seem to have made some poor choices. They can't all be winners.

It's too early to know what the general critical opinion will be. If its bad then Matthias Schoenaerts needs to get a new agent. Blood Ties was mediocre, The Loft looks bad and the review from the Suite Francaise test screening wasn't great.

I just finished seeing the premiere at TIFF and while I very much enjoyed the film and the overwhelming sense of dread throughout (along with the almost surreal humor thrown in), I can't say I disagree with this review. The film did indeed feel shallow and the characters complete Brooklyn working class stereotypes. I also had trouble figuring out if Bob was slow or autistic. Either way I still enjoyed it but recommend tempering expectations a bit.

If you can't go blank to watch a movie, then wait until you can. This is a stunning movie, very well balanced! It seems flow easily, we think to understand every piece of the puzzle, and it seems to be all too easy to know what's gonna come next. But it is a trap! If we thought we were smart, we will find ourselves trapped and be surprised how we were fooled by the seemingly easy development...as unexpectedly the unexpected will catch us and blow us away! This is a great intelligent movie made by an intelligent director who TAKES THE TIME to build his climax, knows exactly what the words "measure" and "rythm" mean, never abuses unnecessarily of the nerves or emotions of the audience with unnecessary or premature violence, and still knows how to get into our bloodstream without we even notice it... to only blowing us away when there is The one good reason for it! The performances of all actors are EXACT and feel unsettling and that is exactly what the movie needed. Go blank to watch it and see what happens! Do not read any (un)wise comment of pretentious "we-know-better"-critics who seem to be so engulfed in their expectations for always more that they can't see anymore that here "less is more" and that we explore -seemingly without fear- a much darker side of the scary shadows around us. So from me: Congrats and thanks to the director M.Roskam and his actors Tom Hardy, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jon Ortiz, Noomi Rapace and of course the late James Gandolfini for this refreshing experience of what a thriller can "also" be.

This review is totally off base. The Drop does have a slow build, but by the end you realize the deliberate pacing was genius. Tom Hardy's character is wonderfully complex to be so seemingly simple. I loved that the movie has an almost 70's feel, and you're left wondering a bit about the time in which the movie is set. There are cellphones, but no smartphones, is this because the characters are working class and kinda old school? Or is it because it's set in the late 90's? Regardless, the question doesn't take you out of the movie, it adds to the authenticity, some of these types of neighborhoods really don't change from decade to decade.

I loved the tentative, cautious romance between Tom Hardy's character and that of Noomi Rapace, it's interestingly awkward, subtly sweet, and dangerous all at the same time.

I was expecting a mob movie, of which I'm not a big fan of the genre, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a good character study, inside a film, with a little mob movie on the side.

Hahahahahhah oh my goodness that little featurette is hilarious. I hate to admit it, but I am crying with laughter, however, that little puppy is incredibly cute.
There are film critics and then there are film cynics. You sir, seem to fall into the latter category. After reading several of your reviews, I\'m fairly certain you pen these loathsome reviews in order to soothe the past wounds of your own works being torn apart, and justifiably so. Your writing reeks of bitter disdain and it\'s more obvious than the plots you take pleasure in ripping apart. I feel sorry for you, little man, to be living in such a joyless world.
