I haven't seen the film, but the deficiency of Olivia's lightheartedness stems from her deficiency to seek help or aid outside of her mother and ex-boyfriend. Clearly, neither one are helping - her mother is sick, and her ex-boyfriend is a lost soul selling Olivia hopes of a brighter future he would never be able to provide or even give. A moment of realization is all she needs, especially from an individual, outside the dismal reality she experiences with her mother and ex-boyfriend, who could really, really, really, REALLY help her when she is clearly hanging by a thread. She is going around in circles hoping for happiness or content in that situation with her mom and ex-bf, how could anyone empathize with someone who doesn't hope for something more? Well, of course she 'wants' something more, but how is she really gonna get it? Certainly not by remaining in a self-inflicted sorta limbo. The only way she can find that hope, or even a sense of joy, is if God (aka the director in this situation) gave her someone to believe in because that person believes in her, her worth, and her beauty - just so she could see it in herself. It might be a cheap plot mechanism, but a character like that would've made all the difference, simply because a character like that could really, really, really help her out, when she really really needs it. (I wrote that really fast - apologies for the disjointed linking of words or phrases)
