"If Clara and Eleanor weren't vampires at all, much of the movie would simply play as a standard drama about a mother and daughter trying to eke out some kind of living in a working class town." - Isn't that pretty much the deal with all Neil Jordan's films; a deconstruction of the fairy tale mythology; finding the ordinary in the extraordinary (didn't anybody see Ondine?). Isn't the above complaint almost like saying "if it didn't have werewolves in it, The Company of Wolves would just be a film about a young girl wrestling with her sexuality"? Does a film with vampires in it automatically become "a vampire movie", or can it be about something else, just with the vampirism used a metaphor (like in Ferrara's The Addiction, or Trouble Every Day by Claire Denis)?

Seemingly, Kevin prefers his vampires to be of the Bela Lugosi kind.
Jordan has already done one of the best vampire movies of the last 20 years.
So he obviously wanted to bring something different and new to the genre this time.
Personally, I like my vampire movies to be atmospheric, in the style of 'Let The Right One In' and 'The Hunger' and not over-the-top pap like 'Twilight', etc.
Which is why I'm looking forward to seeing 'Byzantium' when it opens at a cinema near me.

I love it when a negative review of a movie I want to see clearly points the problems that the reviewer found annoying. So now I know what to expect... but I feel I can deal with this somehow. I mean I'm sill intrigued.
