Haven't you ever herd of satire? Just because Araki chooses to stay true to his generations style of film making doesn't delegitimize its worth. There were plenty of powerful themes in the movie; the lucidity of sexual orientation, the hyper sexualization of youth, the impending doom of any generation. I mean come on, if he wanted to use stereotypical Hollywood style transitions and effects then he obviously could have. The movie was a comedy, get over it.

"Mysterious Skin" was not a fluke. Araki is immensely talented and very very smart, he could be making important/serious films, and I imagine could have had a successful career in the hollywood system as just another hack. Maybe Araki doesn't have anything to say and has zero relevance as a filmmaker. But unless you're making a film about widescale revolution, the failure of capitalism, and the corporate control/corruption of the u.s. goverment... pretty much every film is meaningless. whatever. Araki's films are a good laugh.
