Loved "Summer Hours," too, but then I'm a fan of Assayas. "demonlover" continues to be one of the most resonant films of this decade, despite (or possibly due to) its flaws.

Yeah, I haven’t seen “Sin Nombre” but can say for sure that the other three would be in my top whatever of ’09 so far as well. As well as “Three Monkeys,” “Afterschool” (current #1 of the year), I also saw the Russian Oscar entry “Mermaid” which played on demand I think, which was…interesting and different, but also very Amelie-ish, just a little edgier. Yeah that’s all i got for 09 so far.

Been meaning to see California Dreamin, but yes, it came and went. Hopefully on DVD or hopefully someone has a screener I can borrow.

"California Dreamin' (Endless)" is excellent. I saw it at a festival a year ago and was surprised to see it so quietly dumped into theaters in January.

But I have a soft spot for Romanian film.

“Summer Hours” is my favorite, and i don’t think it’s really a film that shows Assayas’ growth so much as it’s a return to old themes for the director; see his “Late August, Early September” to get what I mean.

Claire Denis’ “35 Shots of Rum” is also up there for me, not that it has a friggin’ American release date yet. And I’m with Matt: “Goodbye Solo” all the way.

I’d also throw in “Two Lovers” (James Gray’s best film since “Little Odessa”), Johnny To’s “Sparrow” (again, no release date yet), and Jia Zhang-ke’s “24 City” (a film Rod should see again). –Sam C. Mac

lower your expectations on Sin Nombre and Hurt Locker. Not because they aren't good, but because pieces like these generally begin to unfortunately build hype that nothing can ever live up to.

Just keep that in mind.

I was so ready to write-off I Love You, Man and it is a total Apatow rip-off, but it it genuinely likable and immensely enjoyable most of the time .

After being sort of turned off by the trailers for “I Love You, Man”, I went and saw it on your word. I really hope people don’t write it off as another Apatow style coomedy, it really is a great little movie.

I can’t wait for “Hurt Locker” and “Sin Nombre”.

"Tokyo Sonata" is excellent, but like all the other films we mentioned we saw them back in September. Not that we're forgetting about them, but most of those we had in our 2008 list because we just didn't want to wait or leave them off (i did two lists, just to be safe).

I need give some love to Gigantic while i'm at it.

For me, “Tokyo Sonata” and “Goodbye Solo” would also be up there.
