Regarding "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" -- I can't believe the worst thing critics seem to be saying about the movie is that's basically more of the same. It's actually much, much worse.

Yes, stylistically it looks and feels identical to the first, but the movie has boring action sequences, predictable story lines, and an overall lifeless, dull feel to it. For how much of a loser the film was critically and commercially, I'm actually surprised it wasn't panned harder.

Sound observations, especially the Tom Cruise section. I read elsewhere that "Edge of Tomorrow" was considered a bomb, and that's simply not true. As you stated, a great film, it did a 100 million domestically without being a super hero movie or a sequel, and it did great overseas. Not a bomb at all.

In the Grown-Ups sections, this cinephile in particular watched five of those aforementioned films (The Rover, Snowpiercer, A Most Wanted Man, Boyhood and The Immigrant) in theaters and loved them all.
Where are these tiny art movies playing? I feel blessed to have a tiny - 30 seats, yup - theatre in town where I saw, Snowpiercer, Obvious Child (which was great), Mood Indigo, among others, and soon The Zero Theorem (which will have been on VOD for almost a month before hitting the screens here), but none of these movies gets an advertising budget, so word of mouth is their only hope. Most of these movies hope to make budget via rentals. Very sad, because these movies are the most original, outside the lame/tame Hollywood formula movies. I crowd funded the new, Hal Hartley, movie. So, I will get my hardcopy of the film. Not sure how, or if, these movies are supposed to even make money in the movie theatres anymore. So, for my favorite directors, I would definitely fund more movies just to get a copy. But between and VOD, I am not sure how small to mid-size movies can make it in the theatres. As for Snowpiecer, imho that should have been a huge hit in the theatres, and instead the movie was fumbled and lost from potential audiences. Too bad.

Godzilla was a frustrating movie in terms of its weak script, but I'm glad it was mentioned as "good" on this list. Director Gareth Edwards pulled a miracle out of nothing, really, from a story that had hollow characters (aside from the one that got killed 40 minutes into the movie) and one that arrogantly assumed it didn't need much action to compensate for the boredom. Edwards took a gamble by holding off on the monsters - what was there was spectacular, but in the future if he wants to use an engaging human storyline as a way to build tension and excitement then he better collaborate closely with a different writer.

The heavy-lifting of rendering the original Godzilla as a CGI character is done - now we know it's possible. Hopefully his potential will be met.

You made an error saying Maleficent made $500m worldwide. Maleficent has made nearly $750m worldwide and is currently the number 2 WW box office hit behind Transformers 4. My guess is it will loose that place to Mockingjay Pt 1 and later The Hobbit, but I reckon that still makes Jolie the biggest movie star in the world right now.
