Regarding Drive, personally I thought the sociopathology of the central character was what made the picture interesting and original. Whereas most of these types of movies give you a cool, badass lead character you can root for, Gosling's Driver was more of a rather creepy man-child in the vein of Travis Bickle. The elevator scene was one of the first instances of screen violence in a long time that actually made me go: "Jesus Christ, what am I watching here?"

Let me start by saying I read this blog all the time. I like a lot of the content (mostly the features). Now...

I think lists of Underrated choices are great - you encourage people to go see films that might have been ignored by the general public (box office). As critics, you are championing films you personally liked. Wonderful.

However, calling something overrated says nothing about the film itself (though you might like it to - "I saw things in this that no one else did, which makes me superior"). Rather, you are complaining about the general consensus (the 'ratings' that were 'over'), and so are arguing with other critics or criticism in general. Not the best way to foster a love of cinema in readers, nor an open discussion about personal/emotional values and merits outside of cinematic criteria (plot, character development, etc.). No one shoe fits all feet (especially in such subjective fields as the arts).

I'm all for discussions and bringing up divisive opinions, but just think there are more constructive ways of going about it. Don't care enough to do it myself, but will leave a comment on this blog post.

Gabe Toro slating on Young Hercules. I KNEW IT! I don't recall seeing her byline before. How do I know this isn't Toro again posting under another pseudonym? It seems highly suspicious that an unknown writer would just suddenly pop up out of nowhere to carry on Toro's wrong-headed jihad. Samantha Chater: Some-man-the Ch(e)ater. AKA Toro.
Oh, Mark Zhuravsky - you had me for a second there. And then you whipped out the most meaningless argument in film criticism (or criticism of any art form, really) - "style vs. substance." Good god. I know it probably sounds good when you write it down, but surely if you've studied film and film history, you can't possibly believe such a reductive and patently false dichotomy has any real relevance or meaning, can you? It just makes your argument sound shallow and poorly thought-out. "Style over substance" is something you'd expect to hear out of a novice, or a 14-year-old, and yet it winds up creeping into published film criticism all too much.

This list makes more sense within the circle of friends these dudes have but what the hell does Tree of Life have to do with Super? Or The Muppets have to do with Red State? They aren't even comparable films. At least Armond White's "Better than list" which this appears to be ripping off of includes an "underrated alternative" to the movie he claims is "overrated" that falls under the same lines thematically or aesthetically.

This is just plain random.

"Hey, know that purely made for the money, special effects popcorn flick named X-Men? Overrated, it blows! But check out this Irish dark comedy from the brother of a prestigious playwright with two of the finest actors in the cinema acting out finely written roles instead!" Makes. No. Sense. They aren't even in the same ballpark!

@Zack. Hilarious comment man. I can't disagree with what you say regarding my comment about Pariah, but I was simply trying to say that so many other varied films I caught after seeing Muppets were simply much better and more worthy of praise and attention. That's all. I didn't intend for it to be a "bold statement." But thanks for cracking me up this morning. Honest.

Crazy picks in my opinion (meaning I disagree intensely with the writers): Drive, Melancholia, Hanna, Hugo, The Guard, Bellflower and Super.

Wow, I was expected to get all fired up while reading this but surprisingly agree with alot of pics. Overrated: The Descendants, TinTin, Midnight in Paris, X Men, Hanna, Hugo, The Muppets, and especially TREE OF LIFE. I only differ when it came to Fright Night being underrated (I personally didn't care for it) and Drive being overrated (so far it's my favorite film of the year), but with the latter film that was bound to happen.

I'd add Fast Five (somehow ending up on a few professional critics top ten lists) and Mission Impossible 4 (somehow ended up with a 95% on rottentomatoes) to the overrated list, and Horrible Bosses although doing over 100 million and getting a fresh tomato on RT to the underrated. A lot of people I've talked to didn't find it all that funny but I found it to be hilarious, and consider it to be a new comedy classic in my mind.

i am not sure how you defined movies that where overrated or underrated... some of the movies you mention in both groups are not uniformly deemed amazing or awful, so how can they be overrated/underrated... maybe appreciated/over appreciated would have worked better?

Samantha took the words out of my mouth regarding Submarine. The people who dismissed it as Rushmore-lite obviously don't watch many movies as it owes much more to early French New Wave than it does Hal Ashby quirkiness. I loved it.

Why not just call this- "Films that got a lot of press" and "Films that didn't".
Other than that, there's no consitancy whatsoever as to quality.
I was underground when I was 17, too.

Glad to see some recommendations for "The Guard" and "Submarine". Both excellent gems that cannot be promoted enough.

Gabe: Interesting thoughts about "Drive", but I do wonder whether it can really be said to be cliched. Winding Refn tell us the film is about a superhero, but do we trust him? I think the idea that the protagonist is a hero is repellent, and intentionally so. By the end, I found myself questioning whether he was even a real human being, never mind a real hero. The horrifying violence forces us to shift our view of a character who begins the film as a sweet and somewhat naive figure, exploited by his boss, whose ties to crime are solely in relation to his passion for driving. He doesn't carry a gun and we think that distances him from the criminal activity he's involved in, but by the end we realise that he's pretty lethal without the use of a firearm. I can't think of any other film with a character arc like this.

Poor boy. You really did not get what X-MEN was about, did you?

Well... too cerebral I guess. Go ahead and watch you mighty THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA or the masterpiece that is called GREEN LANTERN! Maybe those intellectual movies will fit you more.

Really late to the comment party but how could there's no mention of Young Adult? I thought you guys collectively agreed it was one of the more underrated films of the year? A recent article on this site in more or less words stated the same thing. Just curious.
