The night before this year\’s nominations were announced, I predicted Contagion, A Dangerous Method, The Descendents, Hugo Cabret, The Ides of March, J. Edgar, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, War Horse, and We Bought a Zoo.

I made these predictions before the Super Bowl, but after seeing the Super 8 trailer, it does look like a classic film that would likely be nominated if it\’s any good. I do worry, however, that Hugo Cabret, War Horse, and Super 8 have similar target audiences and I could see at least one losing out because of it. I also imagine that my predictions are too big-budget and that smaller films we haven\’t heard of yet will sneak in.

As for your predictions, I think Butter sounds too weird for widespread acclaim and a \”Behind the Scenes\” on Youtube didn\’t do anything to make me think that it won\’t flop terribly. I do agree with you, however, that Contagion will probably be too \’thriller\’ for the Academy. We Bought a Zoo is also probably a silly guess on my part.

I\’ve picked The Tree of Life as my projected BP winner, but if Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close makes it into 2011, I\’ll definitely reconsider since it brings the heart, as you say.

The Best Picture race is always a lot of fun, but given the names behind some of this year\’s film, I\’d say that the Best Director race is going to be one for the ages. Can you imagine a Top 5 of Eastwood, Malick, Polanski, Scorsese, and Spielberg? It could happen! And if not, Abrams, Clooney, Daldry, Fincher, Hanks, Miller, Payne, Soderbergh ensure that this year\’s nominees will be huge names.

This year is gonna suck. And as much as I want to see Tree of Life, I wouldn\’t count on it coming close to winning Best Picture. Malick has even said himself, it\’s less of a movie per se and more of a feeling. Doesn\’t sound like something they\’d go for. It\’ll probably be just like a 2 hour version of the trailer to be honest. Also, with his last film I predicted it would get a Best Picture nom and it didn\’t…thanks New World.

I\’m so not excited about Cars 2. It will be dazzling and the 3D will be used to great effect, but, I don\’t see it as a lock even for the Best Animated movie category. But, Pixar has a way of never disappointing us. Let\’s see, this will be interesting.

I would add ON THE ROAD as a Best Adapted Screenplay nominee as well as either Garrett Hedlund or Sam Riley for a darkhorse Best Actor Nomination for that film.

Also Soderberg\’s CONTAGION has a shot at getting him a Best Director nod as well as as nom for Best Editing (with all he plot threads and characters, etc.)

You also have Hans Zimmer doing the score for the new Superman movie, so that\’s almost guaranteed a good hard look for Best Original Score.
