I found the The Man From Reno utterly incomprehensible. Sure it was atmospheric and intriguing, but its story seemed to just devolve into characters explaining its absurdly convoluted plot to each other (and not in a fun way, as in Inherent Vice). I wanted to like it but found that ultimately it was just impossible to care about.

Thanks for calling out Ex Machina. Vikander was superb but Gleeson\’s unbearly wimpy performance and the general implausibility of the whole thing sunk it for me. Yeah, I know there needs to be a willing suspension of disbelief for any movie involving AI but there was no relatability whatsoever.

@Josh for another example: our review of Macbeth is really positive, right? but it\’s not on our best of list? Because it turns out the author of that review was much more glowing about the film than what turns out to be the rest of us. I think maybe 2 people were really hot on that film, but a lot of others, like myself, were not. But do you really need some 20+ contributors to like ALL give their opinion and grade on a movie? Seems a little pointless.

Also i 100% disagree about Sicario too, but to each his own, right?

Dear Josh, here\’s how a group list works. Everyone votes. So the majority of people like Sicario get into the best of. But OLI personally doesn\’t like it and didn\’t include it in his top 10, but it didn\’t matter, enough people voted for it anyhow. Pretty simple, no? These are INDIVIDUAL PICKs with the writer\’s name right next to them. Not everyone agrees on everything which is pretty normal. Just because the one person who happened to review and like XYZ movie doesn\’t necessarily mean EVERY person loved that same movie. That\’s how life works.

Jeez, what the heck is this? How can movies rated differently by the same people ("the playlist staff") compared to how they rated them in their best movies year rating?? If the writers are indeed all "the playlist staff" then there cannot really be such a disagreement in rating Sicario as 2nd best movie of the year and then stating its overrated at the same time. Maybe that piece here was written by a single person but then it should be indicated as such. Its highly inconsistent to have "all the playlist staff" rate movies so differently from one week to another. I love all these lists, but really HATE all the inconsistencies which you guys make that way.

I think The Good Dinosaur was rated about as well as it deserved; an OK but not great movie. The story was nothing special; the trope of a child being separated from family and having an adventure to find the way back many many times.

But that said, I urge all animation fans to see it anyway. Not for the story but for the beautiful landscape animation; it raises the bar for that sort of thing. Especially don\’t miss the series of shots during the first part of the credits; it\’s like watching the best National Geographic nature footage ever, until you realize that every last bit of it was created by animators.

Lyttleton, totally agree with you. I loved The Voices. Humorous and yet awfully said. Excellent acting by all actors and great direction by Marjane Satrapi. Quite a feat. I also agree about Sicario. Narcotraffic seems to be a major source of inspiration for cinematography. When will it ever end…I am surprised not to see Carol in any of the overrated sections. Cate Blanchett, one of my favourite actresses is in full mode Nora Charles while Rooney Mara is in the \’subtraction modality\’. Somebody should tell her that less is not always more, since it does not impede exaggeration. A very cold, uninvolving story.

Absolutely agree about "Crimson Peak." If only all movies could be so beautifully filmed and passionately acted. Wonder if it\’ll end up becoming a sleeper/cult classic. Just wish it could get the recognition it deserves.

\’Blackhat\’ is underrated? No, I\’d say it is rated appropriately. It\’s got compelling elements, and I wouldn\’t say it is inert, but it\’s surprisingly vapid and underwhelming. And I say that as a big Michael Mann aficionado.

Man this list is DEAD ON! at least of the films in this list I\’ve seen. Awesome to give love the The Gift, Egardton i superb! Jurassic World was a masterclass in nothingness. Ex Machina was far to unbelievable, both in it\’s characters and setting, to even get in to. Sicario had the awesomeness of Del Toro, but everything else let me down including Blunt\’s character (not necessarily her acting), and thanks to your recommendation I\’m now going to check out Blackhat and Far From the Maddening Crowd!
