THE SEA WOLf is a Michael Curtiz masterpiece! Sadly there is NO complete negative or print of this great classic. There were horrendous cuts made to the neg throughout the length of the film which destroyed the magic flow of the direction and fluid camerwork! There is a complete, but battered film 16mm print in Australia that proves this valid point. A man from the industry took the cut TV version, duolicated the cuts from the 16mm film and inserted them into the TV version.
This showed the real worth of the film! The negative was cut in the late 1940's by WB for a double reissue that included THE SEA WOLF.

Four Daughters was NOT a musical. It was the amazing film debut of John Garfield and the introduction of the iconic screen rebel as we know it today. The musical version was Young at Heart with Doris Day and Frank Sinatra in the Garfield role.

People who honestly believe that auteur theory can diminish giants like Curtiz's or Wyler clearly do not understand the auteur theory.

There is something UTTERLY PERVERSE about taking a director's versatility and using that against them. Yes, Curtiz worked within the studio system but that doesn't mean he was a journeman or studio lackey.

Heck, there is a reason why his films CONSISTENTLY showed greatness. There's continuity and vision in his work. He's one of the best, ever.

Curtiz was a great unheralded director. He gave us some of the greatest hollywood films of the studio era - no easy feat. Yes, and his version of Mildred Pierce along with Crawford's searing portrayal will always be the one remembered in the hearts of movie-going audiences. That film and performance are intensely modern and do not date one bit.
