I'm a life-long fan of the character, and defended the first ASM quite a lot because I thought they nailed a lot of the tone of the character (not without its flaws, mind) but my excitement for this dissipated pretty quickly while I was watching it - great action sequences, good lead chemistry, intriguing takes on the villains and a bigger world-building scope couldn't override an uneasy feeling that there was a much tighter, better film lurking amongst the mess. You could almost actually see the fingerprints of The Money on the whole affair, producers saying "we need more this! we need less that! more villains!" and so the tone bounced from incredibly slow emotional scenes to incredibly rushed action/exposition scenes without there being much of a through-line or cohesive theme to the whole thing. I guess I was just disappointed that I could see a good film sitting there but it was trapped amongst a mess of clutter.
I've soured on the Raimi films a lot lately, but it looks like Spider-Man 2 still tops the pile.

I think people take movies too seriously anymore... I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I'm a huge Spidey comic fan, too. BUT I think if you go to see a movie based on any comic, especially your favorite, you should go in without what happens in the comics in your mind at all. This allows you to walk into something with a sense of wonder, rather than a sense of "how close did they make this to the source material?" and you'll have an easier time enjoying it. I liked everything about the movie. Yes, some parts were a little rushed, and maybe kiddish, and Harry seemed maybe a little over the top, but for crying out loud, cannot anyone be entertained anymore? It was a fun movie. I laughed, I shook, I cried... I was able to love each character, and feel sorry for some of them. I loved how it ended, what with him just going all out at Rhino, and making you think, "Did he win? But OF COURSE he's going to win! He's Spider-Man!" THAT is entertainment. But in the critic's world, EVERYTHING has to set some kind of bar. It must suck to be incapable of completely enjoying a movie.

Whoever wrote this was too busy trying to be a **** and not watching the movie. If you actually go in with the mindset to possibly enjoy he movie then the witty Parker banter, Gwen/Peter romance, and hope that Spider-Man brings to NYC is outstanding. This person had to really reach to make "The Bad"section, half the things he says there aren't true. The emotional scenes in this movie break up the great large scale action scenes and really get to the essence of the Spider-Man character. This movie gets a 10/10 in my book and the cast will win plenty of awards.

Both of the ASMs feel like they were the ultimate byproduct of too much studio interference. Both feel too choppy and tonally inconsistent to be what a talented director like Marc Webb would truly have wanted.
Thanks Kurtzman & Orci for ruining another franchise. I don't care if they don't listen to the pop culture geeks but everyone, from critics to the mainstream audience, agreed that the best part of Amazing S-M was Gwen and Peter's relationship. If they had taken the time to understand what made the first film barely work and what the audience wanted more of they would have made a story highlighting Spider-Man and Gwen's love for each other and then the ending would have been earned and heart felt. They were more interested in putting in as many villains as possible (to sell more toys) and to "expand" the Spidey universe (but as you correctly point out de Oscorp thing just made the Spider-Man universe seem so small and local). Just as the Dark Knight brought a tendency to make comic book characters dark and moody, Avengers made executives think that the way to go was to fit in a whole roster of characters in 2 hours and interconnect a bunch of films.

Just as the Dark Knight brought a tendency to make comic book characters dark and moody, Avengers made executives think that the way to go was to fit in a whole roster of characters in 2 hours and interconnect a bunch of films.

i keep reading and i just keep finding your "The bad" parts ridiculous, the score was absolutely PERFECT when it came to what you're showing in your review, holy shit did that score make the scene a million times more intense, while i'm not into dubstep it was also executed perfectly, did you even listen to what was going on in the song?? Yeah it's a bunch of noise but it's all based around Tesla music and other electronic noises because guess what, that's the kind of shit electricity does. It's not anything like the Halo OST or The Last of Us OST which has beautiful orchestral music but if that's the kind of stuff they put into those scenes the music wouldn't make any sense with what was going on.

also "Once again, it's essentially a crib from another superhero movie (the plane sequence is clearly inspired by "The Dark Knight Rises," a film that's barely two years old), and just one more noisy, crude action sequence in a film that's already stacked with them. But it has no stakes or tension, we only faintly care about the characters involved, and we already know they're going to die. " WHAT?! How is that scene anything like The Dark Knight Rises???! They're two completely different scenes. the only thing remotely similar is that there is a plane that crashes, there is no fighting in The Dark Knight Rises plane scene, this is by far the most ignorant thing i've ever read. Why not watch the movie as a movie goer instead of pulling things apart as you watch them, maybe you'll have more time to think about what you're talking about.

No, YOU only faintly care about the characters involved, i was seven or eight when the first spider man movie came out (the ones in the 2000s) and i had no previous knowledge of the spiderman universe besides some of the cartoons and the video games on the N64 and PS1 and the mother and father characters were never explicitly said to have died in any of those outlets. You're opinion's are based not around why you think the movie is a bad spider man movie because you clearly have no idea about anything in the spider man universe.

The opening scene was a segway for us to have some slight interest in what would be going on in the scenes where peter is figuring out whether his dad was in fact a traitor to oscorp or not and while the scene wasn't perfect it's setting was fine and it was well executed for what it was.

My suggestion for doing reviews on any super hero movies in the future, do a little research into the universe and things might make more sense to you.

you're comments about elektro are completely wrong, he's by far the best thing about this movie. He didn't go crazy because of spider man he was already crazy from the start, he had issues with social interaction, was mildly schizophrenic and was never screwed over by the company he worked for. He was taken advantage of but screwed over isn't something that happened until after he had "Died" to the company. Electro's portrayal was what made this movie 100% more enjoyable than the first of this reboot series and it the character was masterfully portrayed by Foxx.

Firstly he had no obsession with the hero until after he was saved by him, his mental instability (which he had before his super villain turn) lead him to misunderstand peter's words and take them into some twisted fantasy of his own. He wasn't even evil until he felt betrayed by his hero spiderman, he was simply scared and didn't know what to do with himself.

Whoever wrote this review hasn't the slightest idea what the comics are, When peter defeats electro in the power plant he isn't killed, he's simply disabled. He's in the sinister six in the comics after his initial defeat by spider man, encouraging him to continue his revenge schemes.

Back on my initial topic of Electro, the reason he changes completely in a character aspect is because when he get's his "Powers" he feels it and know's what he is capable of, he know's he can tear down anything that stands in his way (for the most part) and it's quite obvious why the character would swap personalities, it's not like he went from Max dillon's original personality to freaking Tony Stark, the complete opposite person. He's the same person but with more confidence in his capabilities and a desire to destroy someone he felt betrayed by.

Simply noting a character shift and dismissing it as bad script writing is ignorant especially when it is what the character does for the most part in the comic books.

Overall this movie has more good things to it then bad, and the scene where electro played Itsy Bitsy spider with tesla bolts was simply perfection. Some people might find it campy and dumb but guess what, spider man comics were 90% campy and dumb and that scene fit amazingly.

But anyway, those were my reasons for disagreeing with your points on electro, good night :D
