I do think it\'s unfair to elevate the direction and be so down on the writing. When something doesn\'t work you blame the writer, when it does work you credit the director. The truth is that the two will work much more in tandem than you credit. You single out that, admittedly great, cut in the final ep, praising the director yet it was almost certainly written that way.

Also, given the way these shows are written, it\'s a bit risky being as specific as to criticise a writer for single lines you don\'t like when there\'s a very good chance it was the show runner who wrote it.

I agree with pretty much everything in this article. I was so happy they resolved the Rachel/Doug storyline; it dragged in Season 2 and really dragged in Season 3.

My only complaint not noted here is the way they ended the season. Clearly Claire isn\'t going anywhere and playing that game with the audience (especially as a season ending cliffhanger) felt cheap and stereotypical of low end television. The audience is smarter than that and the day Claire leaves Frank, the show is truly done.

UGH! Such a terrific season nearly ruined by that Doug and Rachel storyline. And the way they brought it to a close? Don\'t even get me started. Hate isn\'t a strong enough word. When I rewatch, I\'ll be skipping over it entirely.

Alexander, the lady writers are absolved purely because I found every episode that was written by a woman (4, 6, 11) clearly stuck out in the writing department from the rest of them. That church scene was in Episode 4, for example (one of those things I\'m kicking myself over not covering, but you can never get to everything!) The debate of Episode 11, and everything in Episode 6, the writing was brilliant. While some of the guys faired well like Willimon himself and John Mankiewicz, none of them were consistently terrific like the gals. Hope that clears it up!

And Shannon, Kelly WAS terrific, he should be nominated and awarded for his efforts this season. I just really don\'t like where they decided to take him this season, but it looks like he\'ll be back to where he belongs in the next one.

I thought Michael Kelly\'s performance was a real tour de force this season. I liked all the sub plots and ancillary characters--but seems like there were just too many to give any of them the development they might have had with more episodes per season. Kevin Spacey\'s church scene was pretty damn awesome too. I thought the season was more rich and complex than previous seasons all in all.

It\'s kind of funny that you absolve women screenwriters of all critique, isn\'t that a little biased?

And "run for its money" got a chuckle for me, don\'t know why so many blogs hated it.

I\'m not sure yet if I like the way HoC has conducted (or should I say misled?) the relationship of the presidential couple. It looks like they\'ve tried to humanise the characters, as if they wanted us to forget their dark past from the previous seasons, such as murder and blackmail attempts, or even to justify that they\'re also human beings with warm feelings. The finest example is the nonsense scene which Claire got emotionally unbalanced due to the convicted activist\'s closure; or when she embarrassed herself in the UN meeting right after her statement regarding the Army. Her self-sufficiency would never allow such impulsive behaviors.

I like when the direction imbues the characters with life. For too much for the first five episodes (that\'s only as far as I\'ve gotten) the characters look and act like evil robots programmed by the writers. Especially Remy and the press secretary. Occasionally she rises above this but often Robin Wright too gets caught in this unappealing style of acting. Clearly there\'s a fine line but I think the only actor on the show who dependably walks it is Spacey.
