Great article, and it\’s never too early to start thinking and talking about the Oscars. I do think that everyone is giving Midnight in Paris too much due too early.

I think we\’re going to see a lot of great films come out this 2nd half of the year — including Moneyball, Dream House, Ides of March, Contagion, TTSS, Artist, Hugo Cabret, Coriolanus, Descendants, Iron Lady, Dragon Tattoo, TinTin, We Bought a Zoo, and War Horse — not to mention the countless number of films premiering at festivals that might end up getting a year-end release if they do well like Cronenberg\’s \”Dangerous Method,\” Arnold\’s \”Wuthering Heights,\” Polanski\’s \”Carnage,\” Reitman\’s \”Young Adult,\” McQueen\’s \”Shame,\” and Winterbottom\’s \”Trishna.\” These other movies more than likely will end up getting pushed aside, with the exception of probably \”The Artist\” (as long as it plays here like it did in France) and maybe \”Tree of Life\” (only because no one thought it would win the Palme d\’Or the way it did, at least from what I was reading).

Now, of course, not all of these will be good and they all won\’t end up coming out this year and we can\’t know until we see them, but there are a lot of great directors coming out with Oscar-baity movies this fall/winter, more so than last year it seems. I think it should actually be a tough year to predict, especially with the new rule.

Kevin, would love to see you proved right on this one. Look forward to seeing The Artist but seems like a tough sell with no dialogue. It might have Hollywood names but the leads aren\’t. And John Goodman isn\’t Brad Pitt.

Have you seen Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy or the Iron Lady? Last I checked they hadn\’t been released or screened yet….usually it\’s good to see the performances first before championing them for Oscars.

Owen Wilson for best actor is all I have to say.

More than \”King\’s Speech\” or even \”Slumdog Millionaire,\” \”The Artist\” is big crowdpleaser and throwback/celebration of classic American movies. If marketed properly and given the right word of mouth, it could be a major player.

Nice article but…The Artist will do well in part \’cos it\’s got no dialogue? Really? That\’s not a selling point. Slumdog is a bright, loud, colourful film made by a name director, plus it\’s a boy and (smokin\’ hot) girl romance with a happy, dancy ending. King\’s Speech is awards bait stuff, overcoming disability, big name actors, period, somewhat safe, etc. The Artist seems waaaay too niche compared to those two, no?

Well yea it\’s kinda early to talk Oscar but no doubt it\’s fun so this article does make sense…

Tree of Life may be nominated for Directing, Visual Effects, Editing and a possible nod for Brad Pitt (though that could come from Moneyball as well) but it will most likely win nothing just like The Thin Red Line. Nothing surprising of course as the best of the year rarely get nominated, let alone win.

I just hope Gary Oldman (Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy) and Meryl Streep (Iron Lady) win.

There\’s absolutely no reason that Kirsten Dunst\’s acclaimed performance should keep her from being a strong contender in the race. Notwithstanding the fact that she\’s clearly an actress making strong movie choices in the recent past, the Academy shouldn\’t disregard her because of Lars Von Trier\’s comments the same way the board at Cannes didn\’t. Personally, I think she\’s a great contender.

I really really really hope Gary Oldman gets nominated that guy is beyond amazing. He deserves an oscar and come on if they give oscars to …. I will not say what people I think dont deserve their oscars because I am not that mean. But I cant believe he hasnt won before. Every single film I see of his whether the film is shit or not. Gary Oldman is just incredible in every role. I just hope and pray he gets one this year. And if that guy never wins an Oscar well they are just shit heads anyway.

You guys failed to mention Rango, which got terrific reviews. I\’m not sure if it\’s a Best Picture contender, but it should be mentioned as a very long shot. And it\’s basically got no real competition for Animated Feature at this point.

No, I only wish I saw those films. Meryl Streep playing Thatcher in a film being released in the core of awards season is pretty much a given nomination. And, for me, there is no better actress out there than Streep. Everytime she was nominated (what\’s that now, 20?) she deserved to win and was more often than not robbed by a lesser performance. So i\’m just hoping it doesn\’t happen this time yet again …

As for Oldman, the man never receved a nomination by the Academy which really boggles the mind. Early word is Tinker, Tailor… is his best performance and biggest chance for the statue and since I\’m a big fan of Oldman too, I\’d like to see him walk away with it.

But of course, we\’ll have to weigh them against the competition..
