It will always strike me as weird that Michael Clayton got praised as a Lumet-esque masterpiece when Sidney Lumet himself made a eminently watchable film in the same year…at the age of 83. Why people collectively shrugged Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead off and simply waited for Lumet to die was one of the more pathetic moments in the critic universe. Plus, for many of us, it was our introduction to Michael Shannon wherein his thug brother side role easily stole the show.

I liked Michael Clayton but it was not worthy the top 5 spot. I believe this was the year with some of the most incredible jobs made by cinematographers. I can\’t decide which one is the most impressive.

Glad to see \’There Will Be Blood,\’ \’No Country for Old Men\’ and \’Assassination of Jesse James…\’ rank highly. Also glad to see \’Zodiac\’ on there, but I\’d put it at number two. But I cannot believe that \’I\’m Not There\’ or \’Eastern Promises\’ are not on there. I\’d put them on the list above every other film, excluding the aforementioned.

Great list! I would have bumped the Orphanage for Susanne Bier\’s After the Wedding. And No Country for Old Men would have taken my top spot. With Away from Her close behind.

2007 was my favorite year of the aughts after 2001–some of my favorites that didn\’t receive any sort of mention even though Shrek the 3rd did were Into the Wild, Grindhouse, Before the Devil Knows You\’re Dead, and Hot Fuzz

Wow not even an honorable mention for my favorite film of the year, Into the Wild!!! So whack. Nor the films Once, American Gangster, Planet Terror, We Own the Night etc… The rest of my list included, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, Sunshine, Zodiac, Gone Baby Gone, Assassination of Jesse James, Superbad, Knocked Up and Darjeeling Limited even though it is in no way better than Life Aquatic like the article suggests. I also enjoyed films like Juno and Dan in Real Life. So many good films this year!

Wes, I agree with \’Silent Light,\’ \’4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days\’ and \’Paranoid Park,\’ but was planning on including them on later years when they were released in the U.S. Also, agree that \’Grindhouse\’ should have gotten more love.

This is one of the best lists I\’ve seen, 4 or 5 of my favorite films are, I\’m so happy \’There Will Be Blood\’ is in number one, I also love \’The Diving Bell and the Butterfly\’, what a beautiful movie. And I\’m glad you found a spot for \’Jesse James\’, such and underrated film, best of the year. But come on, \’Darjeeling\’ better than \’Life Aquatic\’? I don\’t get the hate for that movie, my third favorite Anderson film.

Yeah, I loved \’I\’m Not There\’ and think it is undoubtedly the bio movie against which other films about artists from recent years should be judged. Such an original film. I\’d have put it on there over \’The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,\’ \’Away from Her,\’ \’The Host,\’ \’This is England\’ or \’Michael Clayton.\’

So glad to see that someone mentioned Silent Light in the comments. That movie was a revelation for me. The beauty of the camera brought such wonder that I felt her resurrection come to life in my heart. Amazing!
