Is it weird to say that I both think Knight of Cups is a masterpiece and I’m not very excited about Voyage of Time? I’ve seen the creation sequence in Tree of Life, and I’ve seen Planet Earth and Cosmos and Koyaanisqatsi; this has always seemed like just another project like that, something that’s already been done, just with a little more poetry and beauty than normal. It’s ok–I like Planet Earth and Cosmos and Koyaanisqatsi. But the radicalism of things like The New World and Knight of Cups, where we see things from angles we never have before, and themes and concepts are both dialectically opposed and part of the same incredibly fluid continuity, that’s what I watch Malick for.

I’m awfully glad he didn’t, since To the Wonder is the second best film of the decade so far – and one of the three truly great films Malick has made, in my estimation.

Yeah, this was my biggest fear about this whole project… an extension of the rambling, mumbly voiceover of late period Malick set to CG space vistas. Wish he had just stopped at New World. Bummer.
