That argument is so moronic, it\’s infuriating. If an unknown filmmaker had made the EXACT same film, they wouldn\’t even get a fraction of the defenders Gosling has. Look at these hipster Gosling lovers rushing to defend his "formalism" knowing damn well they wouldn\’t make those same excuses for even other famous filmmakers. Jordan Hoffman is a shameless case, he wrote TWO positive reviews for it for two different publications. Critics weren\’t gunning for it. They favored it and made excuses for their beloved Gosling, but the movie was so bad it couldn\’t even muster enough support beyond like 35% of critics. Stop making excuses for this pretentious derivative trash by claiming it\’s a "future cult classic." That\’s the same dribble people said about Sucker Punch.

I think to compare him to a "first time filmmaker," is a bit of an insult and a way to cop-out on not liking the movie. Gosling guy has been in the business for almost his entire life. He\’s been in over 30 movies and has been executive producer on a hand full of them as well. Saying that if his movie was made by an amateur we\’d let things we don\’t like slide is an insult to film criticism. He made the movie he wanted to make. Either you like it or you don\’t. I\’m sure he knows that as well.

It is more probable that, had the director been an unknown, the film would not have been presented at Cannes at all. But I greatly admire the strategy followed: "OK, the film is crazy. Let us freeze it and after a while thaw it and put it in circulation. We know from experience that fans and certain critics see what they want to see or be made to see, no matter how bad the film is". It is terribly easy to point at irrelevant little flaws in a very good film and write a panegyric about an abortion of a film (The style and the oneiric atmosphere are mesmerising. Very ambitious film. Future cult film, etc. etc.).

Aaron and Yeah But, So because his position afforded him the opportunity to get 5 million dollars for his movie he should have refused it? Also I don\’t think Gosling asked for any of the notoriety or attention that his film has received. He didn\’t ask to be in the Cannes film festival. Critics were gunning for the film unfairly.

It\’s kind of a pointless assertion. Not only did he get money to do it because of his profile, but the movie\’s style comes out of his high-profile collaborations with Winding Refn. You can\’t only make that comment from one side. Gosling MADE this movie as a star, knowing it would get attention. Most first-time filmmakers can\’t say that, either.

But the movie cost 5 million dollars. So the hypothetical is based on a false premise. No unknown filmmaker could\’ve made it, because she couldn\’t have accumulated the capital. Name one first time, out of nowhere filmmaker to have made a movie that cost 5 million bucks ever. Flattering quasi-questions like "How did he do that!?" would be easily answered by "He had 5 millions dollars." Even in the indie-financing golden age of the 90s guys like Tarantino and James Gray and PTA\’s first movies\’ budgets were only equivalent to like 3 mil today. The standard Lost River is being held to has to do more with perceived indulgent immaturity (only possible cuz of the money) than the fact that Gosling is a huge star. Of course if an unknown made it it\’d be a sensation. Because it would be a miracle. A better hypothetical example would be like, what if the dude who made Beyond the Black Rainbow followed that up with Lost River? Like, what if some 2nd or 3rd time indie filmmaker made it. I think the reception would be about equivalent
