Francis Ford Coppola’s “Youth Without Youth” didn’t do his career many favors. At least not from audiences and critics that were confounded by the seemingly incomprehensible nature of the film’s metaphysical doppelganger-type themes of everlasting life, etc.

However, it facilitated Coppola’s return after a ten-year sojourn tending to his vineyards and struggling to complete his ambitious and still-uncompleted magnum opus “Megalopolis” (the semi-similar ‘Benjamin Button’ with its similar looming clock might have killed it all together), and we welcomed his return.

“Every family has a secret” is the tagline of Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming mostly black and white family drama, “Tetro” starring Vincent Gallo.

What might be the biggest secret, or at least surprise, of the film itself is how unlikely the picture’s tone is.

Given Coppola’s last film, the metaphysical quandry “Youth Without Youth” (don’t believe the hype, it’s not a terrible film, that is unless you’re popcorn muncher who needs everything fed to them), and the moody and sullen B&W images of Vincent Gallo we’ve seen so far, we were expecting a pretty heavy drama.

It’s completely possible that Francis Ford Coppola is a total tyrant and or a major prick, but based on every interview we’ve seen with him all our lives, we have this fairy tale image of him as a very compassionate and caring avuncular figure. So we have sort of nightmare visions of “Tetro” star Vincent Gallo treating him like garbage. Hopefully that’s not the case.

What’s “Tetro”? Coppola’s follow-up to 2007’s “Youth Without Youth,” which marked his return to filmmaking after a 10-year absence.

Look at their faces, Robin Williams looks like he’s been up to mischievous no good and Tim Roth looks dumbfounded like, “you’re fucking shittin’ me.”

And maybe it’s with good reason. Remember “Jack”? Francis Ford Coppola’s near career-crippling film with Robin Williams? The film was savaged by critics and it basically rang the death knell for the aging, seemingly obsolete and out-out-touch once-auteur (“Jack” rates just above syphilis and anal cancer on the Metacritic scale, though “The Rainmaker” quietly redeemed Coppola before he bowed out into a 1o-year retirement to tend to his rather good vineyards and wines).

Where does one start with Ridley Scott? The guy is a master technician, his films are immaculately executed and shot, but what was the last film of his that you really cared about? “Blade Runner”? “Alien”? Sure “Blackhawk Down” and “Gladiator” are arguably strong movies, but do either really resonate with you deeply?

Perhaps this is a subjective argument, the problem with “American Gangster” more than anything is that it’s less a story than it is a “movie” (and make sure the quotations are in place).
