To understand if “Knife + Heart” is a film for you, all you need to hear is the basic premise. From there, it’ll be readily apparent if you’re ready to experience co-writer and director Yann Gonzalez’s upcoming French thriller.

Style over substance—the eternal struggle waging within genre films. This is a particular challenge for filmmakers who employ genre molds torn out of context (or fallen out of fashion): ‘70s New Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino and more recently, Nicholas Winding Refn. “Knife + Heart,” the second film by French director Yann Gonzalez, struggles to find a balance as he retrofits the Italian giallo formula for “Knife + Heart,” making its Canadian Premiere at Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinéma.

It looks like French musicians M83 are making their way back to the feature film space for the first time since 2013. The group signed on to compose the score for two films that year, the first was the big-budget Tom Cruise sci-fi flop, “Oblivion.” The second film was the lesser-known Cannes film “You and the Night” from filmmaker Yann Gonzalez.
