If you were around in the 1990s or old enough to remember anyhow, the millennial Y2K phenomenon is both a panic and hilarious joke to some. In 1999, as the new year approached, Y2K referred to the potential computer errors related to the formatting and storage of calendar data for dates in and after the year 2000. The paranoid suspected a kind of global collapse and crisis where everything digital stopped working. Of course, nothing happened, and the less unreasonable of us just partied that night like nothing had happened.

What if the Y2K predictions were right? A new film offers its own comedic spin on an event that promised chaos but fizzled. “Y2K” sees two friends attend a seemingly ordinary New Year’s Eve party, one that happens to take place in 1999. Everything changes when the partygoers find themselves dealing with a host of murderous devices. The project hails from director Kyle Mooney. Mooney, an “SNL” alum, also co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Winter.

It’s that time of year again and yes, no rest for the wicked. Following the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlinale, Austin, Texas, gets its day in the humid sun this week with the 2024 edition of the SXSW Film & TV Festival. As its new-ish title suggests, SXSW is no longer just a film festival and has expanded in recent years to make room for the glut of streaming content and re-emerged second golden age of filmmaker-driven prestige TV.
