Review: ‘World’s Greatest Dad’ Disturbingly Funny, Yet Grounded

Bobcat Goldthwait’s new film “World’s Greatest Dad” is a pitch black comedy. And it’s one that was met with raves at Sundance which lead us to believe — like many of the raves at Sundance — that it would be an average indie picture overrated by film festival intoxication. So it’s nice to see this clever, little sly bastard of a picture live up to the hype.

It’s delightfully twisted, subversive and wrong on oh-so-many perfect levels.

Following up on last week’s “District 9” and “Ponyo,” film lovers across the country have even more reasons to celebrate as one of the most anticipated releases of the year opens at multiplexes nationwide. Late summer has never been so good.

In Wide Release: Opening on what has to be a record (for Tarantino) 3000+ screens, “Inglourious Basterds” has been on everyone’s radar for years now. You’ve probably read the script, watched each little bit of media on the web, analyzed every ridiculous interview, and maybe even purchased the souvenir mug.

Playin’ It Safe? Poster And Trailer For Bobcat Goldthwait’s ‘World’s Greatest Dad’ Nowhere As Dark & Twisted As Supposed Film

Magnolia Films have unveiled a trailer and poster combination in anticipation of the upcoming release for Bobcat Goldthwait’s (“Sleeping Dogs Lie,” TV’s “The Chapelle Show”) indie-dramedy “World’s Greatest Dad.”

The film stars Robin Williams as Lance Clayton, a high school poetry teacher and single father who yearns for so much more. In light of a freak accident and in the face of the greatest tragedy in his life, Lance takes a path that could help him achieve his dreams – as long as he can live with the knowledge of how he got there.

Magnolia To Release Dark Robin Williams Film, ‘World’s Greatest Dad’ For Late August

We placed “World’s Greatest Dad” — Bob Goldthwait’s politically incorrect black comedy about a father (Robin Williams) whose fake suicide note for his son turns him into a publishing sensation — on our list of 15-plus films you should see at Sundance 2009 earlier this year.

We didn’t fly out to Mormon country of course, but the premise did sound pretty great and reviews seemed to be mostly positive (though we’ll admit we didn’t see that many either way).

15+ Films You Should See If You’re Going To Sundance 2009

Ok, we’re not going to Sundance this year, like a lot of other journalists and freelancers (the event is “subdued” and “chilled” this year evidently). The line-up seems underwhelming, but then again, it always feels that way to us and then people come back and rave and we finally get interested, but we need to see things like “I Love You Phillip Morris” with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as gay men in love like we need a bullet in the head (though to be fair it’s written by the guys who wrote “Bad Santa” so there’s hope).
