Veteran filmmaker Marc Forster (“Finding Neverland,” “Christopher Robin,” “Quantum of Solace”) has been tapped to direct the feature adaptation of the graphic novel “White Bird: A Wonder Story” for Mandeville Films and Lionsgate. The story of the graphic novel stems from the same universe as Lionsgate’s 2017 film “Wonder.” Yes, that Jacob Tremblay, Owen Wilson, and Julia Roberts-led “Wonder,” which earned a sneaky Oscar nomination for Makeup and Hairstyling.

2017 was something of a mixed bag for Hollywood at the box office. After last year’s record domestic receipts, $11.37 billion, it was likely that there would be a decrease in revenues and tickets sold overall.  But by the end of the year, returns should come close to 2015’s $11.12 billion take. Sure, the tickets sold won’t crack 1.3 billion and we’ll admit that’s slightly concerning.  However, many people forget that that was the norm in the ‘80s and early ‘90s – and it has already happened twice in this decade.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the seven finalists for the Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar and there were some surprising omissions. Left off the list were  “It,” “Logan,” Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “The Post,” “Blade Runner: 2049” and “Beauty and the Beast,” among others.  The biggest snub of all, however, has to be Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.”

Sentimentality can be tricky to handle. Without it, a film can feel emotionally empty, but too much can be cloying and manipulative. “Wonder,” based on the acclaimed, best-selling novel of the same name by R.J. Palacio, falls somewhere in the middle. It’s certainly good-hearted, and it’s hard to fault the film’s compassion and earnestness, yet at the same time, it never rings completely true. More benevolent than emotionally enriching, it’s an unremarkable but nevertheless lightly affecting weeper for all audiences.

LAS VEGAS – Lionsgate was the 10th and final studio to present its upcoming slate to the world’s theater owners today and they ended their event with an early screening of the upcoming Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson action comedy “The Hitman’s Bodyguard.” Any written reaction is embargoed at the moment, but one of its stars, Salma Hayek, predicted a sequel. That being said, the mini-major did push some of its other notable releases and was surprisingly quiet on others.
