The filmmaker that has the weight of the entire DC film universe on her back is currently in production on the follow-up to her massively successful “Wonder Woman.” So far, all the news surrounding “Wonder Woman 1984” (that’s the best you could come up with, WB?), has been great. We have a new time period (still way before the Snyder-verse mess) and an intriguing villain played by Kristin Wiig.

Fresh off of director Patty Jenkins‘ announcement of Kristin Wiig as the villain Cheetah in the upcoming “Wonder Woman 2,” we now have another big casting announcement for the sequel to last year’s box office blockbuster. According to a recent report, Pedro Pascal, currently seen as Javier Peña on the Netflix hit show “Narcos,” will join the cast of the superhero film in an undisclosed role.

While some would call “Wonder Woman” a silver lining for DC Films, I’d call it life preserver. The film remains the lone bright spot in the otherwise mangled movie franchise, and is perhaps the one property and character keeping everything else afloat. There has already been rumors suggesting that Warner Bros. might make Wonder Woman the central focus of the superhero movie universe going forward, which makes sense for a character that has become beloved and iconic.

It must be enormously satisfying to be Patty Jenkins right now. The filmmaker made a hell of a directorial debut with the Oscar-winning “Monster,” but struggled, as female directors often do, to find financing for a follow-up feature. Finally, she landed the job of directing Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World,” only to part ways with the studio over creative differences (the film went on to be pretty much the worst in the MCU: Marvel still haven’t hired a solo female helmer).

Update (9/11/17): Variety have confirmed that Jenkins’ deal has closed, and the helmer will be returning to direct “Wonder Woman 2.” Excellent news!

To put it bluntly, Patty Jenkins saved DC Films.

Warner Bros.’ plan to emulate Marvel with their own comic book universe had a very rough start. “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” were both costly critical failures, and while we can argue about the merits of their box office returns, the bottom line is the brand value really took a hit.

Well, we all expected it, and some had hoped it would be announced at San Diego Comic Con. Either way, Warner Bros. and DC Films aren’t messing around, and getting the sequel to “Wonder Woman” headed to the big screen as soon as possible.

“Wonder Woman 2” has been officially set for a December 13, 2019 release date.

It’s been an interesting 48 hours for Warner Bros. and DC Films. On Friday, it was reported that Ben Affleck was leaving the Batman role, or more precisely would be phasing himself out of the role (by Kim Masters of THR who is rarely wrong, FYI). It seemed like a PR disaster; just 24 hours before the Warner Bros. Comic Con panel, it appeared as though there would be no more Affleck as Batman in the DCEU.
