The director is in dazzling form behind the camera, and also powers the whole movie from end to end with a carefully curated selection of songs that pretty much choreograph every movement in the movie.

As iconic as Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie — and arguably more so — was the music that powered Danny Boyle‘s zeitgeist capturing “Trainspotting.” It launched the mass commercialization of Iggy Pop‘s “Lust For Life,” and for a few years there it seems you couldn’t turn around without bumping into the song, while Underworld‘s “Born Slippy” went from the clubs and into the homes of kids everywhere.

The rock documentary/concert movie is almost as old as rock and roll itself, thanks to shining early examples of the genre like “The Last Waltz,” “Sympathy For The Devil” and “Woodstock.” But it’s a form that got old quite fast, and while you occasionally see a great one, a picture that twists the form on its head or shoots in an inventive new way (Andrew Dominik’s “One More Time With Feeling,” which Jess loved at Venice, for instance), there’s a certain formula that these things fall into, and they tend to only be for hardcore fans of the band.

For someone who usually knocks out a film a year, Michael Winterbottom’s been rather quiet of late. He’s actually continued on his usual rate of productivity, but the last few films from the brilliant but somewhat patchy British filmmaker have made rather small drops in the ocean — few saw his Amanda Knox-inspired “The Face Of An Angel,” and fewer still his Russell Brand-fronted documentary “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

But the good news is that Winterbottom’s back, and he’s returning to the music world that inspired some of his best work, with a new movie set to debut next month.
