With Taylor Sheridan out there ruling the world with his “Yellowstone” empire, it’s clear that studios are going to want to hitch their wagons to the filmmaker. One of those studios is Castle Rock Entertainment, which just announced plans for a sequel to “Wind River.”

According to Castle Rock Entertainment, the studio is developing a new film, titled “Wind River: The Next Chapter,” which as the title suggests, is in fact the next chapter in the story of “Wind River.” The 2017 film is written and directed by Sheridan and stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen.

CBS-Viacom made some major television announcements today about the upcoming programming of their streaming service Paramount+, formerly known as CBS All Access. A couple of the big announcements will see new shows from Taylor Sheridan, who has quietly become Paramount+s biggest player with the ratings-hit series “Yellowstone.” The filmmaker, also known for “Hell or High Water,” will be reuniting with his “Wind River” star Jeremy Renner for a new prison series, titled “Mayor of Kingstown,” that will executive produced by Antoine Fuqua.

It is was one of the many shows mentioned during the Paramount+ investors day presentation, and The Hollywood Reporter posted the synopsis.

Cinema is, quite literally, action, and while some of the snootier critics might look down on the action movie, there are few purer cinematic pleasures than looking at a great set-piece sequence, from “The General” to “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Technology might have made jaw-dropping spectacle easier than ever to pull off, but a summer where CGI behemoths were outshone by more modest, old-fashioned movies reminded us that thrills come from craft more than they come from blowing up a bajillion robots (though, when done right, the latter can be fun too).

It’s been the worst box office summer in decades in 2017, and appropriately enough, it ends with a whimper. With no new major wide releases hitting cinemas, this was the worst Labor Day weekend at the movies in seventeen years, which led to some strange outcomes.

“The Hitman’s Bodyguard” stayed at the top of the box office with a surprising 0.1% drop in attendance since last weekend, earning $10.2 million.

On the cruder side of things, the distributor used boobs to promote their forever delayed period drama “Tulip Fever.” However, they can be classy, as they show with “Wind River,” with the film expanding into more cinemas this weekend.

All summer, studios have been complaining about Rotten Tomatoes having too much of an influence on moviegoers. Well, this weekend proved that people will see what they want to see, regardless of what critics say.

Mostly negative notices didn’t stop the charm offensive from Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, who teamed up to take “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” to $21.6 million. Sure, it’s not “Deadpool” numbers, but it’s a good showing for the R-rated movie, that’s budgeted at $29 million.

It’s gone slightly under the radar, but after a few underwhelming efforts Elizabeth Olsen is hitting a peak point in her career.  After her breakthrough in “Martha Marcy May Marlene” six years ago, she starred in a number of forgettable indies (“Liberal Arts,” “I Saw The Light”) and a summer blockbuster most viewers probably don’t remember she was even in (“Godzilla”).   She was fortunate enough to land the role of Wanda Maximoff aka The Scarlet Witch in Marvel Studios “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” however, and reprised her role in the very well received “Captain America: Civil War” a little over a year ago.

The conversation continues to swirl around whether or not critics and Rotten Tomatoes scores are hurting the box office chances of terrible movies. Certainly, a brutal 18% score on the review aggregator, Sony was bracing themselves for the returns of “The Dark Tower” this weekend, but it looks like they have an unconvincing victory on their hands.

The Stephen King adaptation took the top spot at the multiplex with $19.5 million, barely edging out Christopher Nolan‘s “Dunkirk” which landed in second place with $17.6 million (the WWII film is now at $314 million worldwide).

Ruben Östlund‘s “The Square” walked away the big winner, the unexpected recipient of the Palme d’Or. Continuing his tremendous run at Cannes, Andrey Zvyagintsev (who previously won Best Screenplay and a Special Jury Prize from Un Certain Regard) took home the Jury Prize for “Loveless.” The hotly buzzed “12o Beats Per Minute” landed the Grand Prix, though many expected it to take the Palme.
