There were few surprises at the 25th Annual Art Directors Guild Awards. The pandemic delayed virtual ceremony honored old favorites and eventual Oscar and Emmy, winners. The major honories of the night included “Mank,” “Soul,” “Ozark,” “Black Is King,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Mandalorian” and “Tenet.”

This actually turned out to be Donald Graham Burt‘s second win of the day as “Mank” also took the BAFTA honor for Production Design.

The Writer’s Guild of American handed out the 2018 WGA Awards at two concurrent ceremonies on Sunday evening in New York and Los Angeles.  As always, the writers liked to defy expectations while keeping their reputations intact as “sort of” Oscar precursors and that’s good news for “Get Out” and “Call Me By Your Name.”  The Los Angeles ceremony was hosted by Patton Oswalt and the New York ceremony was emceed by Julie Klausner.

Friday night, the American Cinema Editors awarded their year-end awards and Saturday night the Art Directors Guild had their say.  “The Shape of Water,” “Logan” and “Blade Runner 2049” were the big film winners at the ADG Awards, making the former and the later the presumptive frontrunners for the Best Production Design Oscar.  While not nominated for the Academy Award, “Logan” was the biggest surprise winner as it beat out “Downsizing” and “Get Out” in the ADG Contemporary Film category.

It’s Golden Globes time. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the nominations for the 75th Golden Globe Awards this morning. The nominees were announced by Kristen Bell, Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund and Sharon Stone.

It’s that time of year again. That annual rite of passage where movie and TV fans hold their tongue for the 83 or so members of the venerable Hollywood Foreign Press Association (aka HFPA) to shower the global news marketplace with their Golden Globes nominations.  The irony is that in 2017 the HFPA’s little January fete seems like comfort food compared to the constant craziness going on in the world in general  (or at least in the White House).
