One of the biggest film surprises of 2020 has to be the release of “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” After more than a decade away from the public eye, Borat returned (that is to say, actor-writer Sacha Baron Cohen brought his character out of retirement) and attempted to sway people away from voting for Trump. And according to Baron Cohen, that’s the only reason he decided to make the film.

Speaking to Variety, Sacha Baron Cohen detailed the behind-the-scenes discussions about how “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” became a reality and how it spawned from the development of another undercover comedy film.

The first episode featured a parade of conservative lawmakers endorsing a fictitious plan to arm toddlers to protect themselves in classrooms. What could possibly top that? How about a Georgia lawmaker pulling down his pants and yelling the N-word at the top of his lungs? Yep, that’ll do it.

It’s been pretty astounding to watch the unintended promotional tour of those who have been pranked by Sacha Baron Cohen on his new Showtime series, “Who Is America?”: a litany of Tea Partiers, alt-right hardliners and gun nuts tripping over themselves trying to get ahead of being seriously owned by the comedian. First, realizing she’d been duped and probably seriously embarrassing what’s left of her tattered reputation, former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin tried to get ahead of the idiotic things she told Cohen.
