However, adding to the mix is the addition of Gerwig’s partner, Noah Baumbach, as a co-writer of the “Barbie” screenplay. And according to Baumbach, his work on his most recent film, “White Noise,” had an impact on how he and Gerwig approached “Barbie,” oddly enough.

So is “White Noise” worth the wait for Netflix subscribers? That’s a difficult question to answer.

As we start the final countdown of 2022, many of us continue to play desperate catch-up of the year’s best, making the prospect of an entire month worth of new releases daunting. November was overloaded with quality releases week-to-week, and December is set for some of the biggest releases of the year. From kicking the month off with the violent twist on Santa Claus to the celebrated return of Brendan Fraser in a leading role, the latest feature from indie darling Joanna Hogg, to the much anticipated “Avatar: The Way of Water,” December sees 2022 ending on a big note.

“Violent Night”
David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) stars in the Santa Claus action film “Violent Night” directed by Tommy Wirkola.

Critics loved his last film, 2019’s “Marriage Story,” which racked up six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture. But is Baumbach over his head adapting Don Delillo‘s 1985 novel? Critical generally like it, but now audiences get to have their say, as the film hits select theaters before its exclusive Netflix premiere.

In conversation with actress Emily Mortimer this past Saturday during the 60th New York Film Festival, which had opened with “White Noise” the night before, Baumbach discussed the challenges of doing so, also touching upon his experiences working with younger actors and getting screenwriting advice from the Coens.

Thankfully, in the middle of the 1980s, just when Western (read: American) culture was fully losing the run of itself in a frenzy of gum-snapping consumerism and prescription narcotics, Don DeLillo‘s “White Noise” appeared — you might almost say manifested — as a mischievous, mindbending 326-page reminder to the century that it wasn’t, in fact, all that.

In what we can hope continues to be the safest and most productive year of moviegoing since 2019, festivals have returned to in-person gatherings (including in Toronto, Venice, and New York, where we’ll see many below titles premiere), blockbusters are taking up real estate at the multiplex again, and upcoming award ceremonies are preparing to go without the Zoom red carpets.

Namely, Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” Alejandro Innaritu’s “Bardo,” Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” and Sebastian Lilo’s “The Wonder.” Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in early September, was recently dated for December 23 for a Netflix release, and while Netflix has revealed its entire fall slate today, December looks like it’ll be the month for most of its Oscar contenders.

That’s right, blockbuster season is essentially over, and now it’s time for the fall film festival circuit to produce and premiere the film titles that will be vying for Oscars later this year. As always, the Venice Film Festival kicks off the season first, and the 79th edition is as strong as ever, proving that the festival is just as important as France’s Cannes Film Festival, if not more so.

Partly, this is because Venice has become a destination for studios who want to debut films that will likely become awards contenders, and partly, because Cannes and the streaming service can’t seem to figure out their differences. Though nothing is set in stone, just yet, it appears 2022 is shaping up to be another banner year for Netflix in Venice.

Still, in the new accelerated age of streaming with HBO Max, Apple TV+, Amazon, Netflix, and all the new players popping up every single day, it seems, the task becomes more and more daunting and nearly impossible (we could have easily gone to 200 this year).

So we’re post-COVID, but oops, not-yet post-COVID, but somehow movies have survived, even if the theatrical market becomes a more challenging and riskier gambit.

Apparently, if you’re Noah Baumbach and your previous film was “Marriage Story,” you get approximately $80 million and a 7-month shooting schedule to make an adaptation of “White Noise.” While we already knew “White Noise” was in development, it appears that Baumbach is prepping for production to begin this summer and has hired two more actors to join Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig in the film.
