Zombies used to be punk rock. Under the radar, off the grid, and away from the mainstream, most zombie movies only showed modest returns, coupled with cult followings from a small legion of the devoted, and big studios seemed to avoid the lure of spending too much to promote whatever flesh-eating epics they had on the docket. The “Dawn of the Dead” remake seemed to change that, becoming the highest grossing zombie movie in history, which might now be eclipsed with “Zombieland.” The cheap zom-com pulled in $25 million, and has an outside chance of surpassing the “Dawn” remake given that film’s precipitous post-first-weekend decline.

In Wide Release: Michael Moore’s highly anticipated new film “Capitalism: A Love Story,” which opened on a few screens last weekend hits full-on this weekend. Moore himself is once again the star of the show as he tackles the financial empires controlling the nation’s banks.

Drew Barrymore’s roller derby dramedy, “Whip It” starring Ellen Page — and an ensemble that also features Andrew Wilson, Kirsten Wiig, Eve, Alia Shawkat, Jimmy Fallon, Juliette Lewis — hits theaters this Friday (October 2).

We saw it the picture at TIFF recently and while it starts out a little uneven initially, it does make for a sweet, come-from-behind victory. And Marcia Gay Harden is really the best thing about it, playing a mother who’s wonderfully flawed and yet still likable — sort of like all mom’s lovable, but sometimes big pains in the ass.

Why “Whip It” when there are thousands of other films at TIFF we could see probably many of them that need the love?

Morbid curiosity got the better of us? Something like that. We’ll admit, the trailers looked a lot better than we expected and the cast, which includes folks like Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon and Daniel Stern, is fairly intriguing. Still part of us did feel guilty that we weren’t watching a Claire Denis movie.

Ok, we’re beginning to wind down. This debacle is almost over. Last year we somehow cranked out reviews two-three hours after every screening like clockwork. That’s kind of insane and it’s no wonder we didn’t do it again.

Today was only three pictures. The day started out with Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It” which turned out to be enjoyable after a very dull and rough start that almost forced a walk out on our part.

‘Whip It’ Soundtrack, Ala ‘Juno’ May Deliver Second Bonus CD With Radiohead & Extra Tracks

We already revealed all the details to the 19-track indie-riffic soundtrack to the roller-derby comedy, “Whip It!” from director Drew Barrymore earlier this month.

With help from Wes Anderson’s music supervisor Randall Poster, the disc features folks like Jens Lekman, The Ramones, The Go! Team, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Breeders and more and the soundtrack disc comes out on September 29 on Rhino Records.

But there might be more to come.

French First Lady To Star In Woody Allen’s 2010 Paris Project, Marion Cotillard And Penelope Cruz Revealed As Oscar Contenders From ‘Nine’?

– France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has reportedly agreed to star in Woody Allen’s Paris-set project due to film in the summer of 2010. Allen had expressed interest in casting the actress/musician and had previously discussed with the press the prospect of asking her to join.

– Two test screening reports have revealed the scope of performances in Rob Marshall’s “Nine.” Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz were reported as having the best Oscar chances as Cruz apparently has the “meatiest role of anyone in the film and milks it for all its worth” while Cotillard plays “the most sympathetic role” and is “the character you care about and the one people will likely remember.” Kate Hudson, Judi Dench, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, Sofia Loren and Nicole Kidman all received mixed reviews and were noted to have smaller roles.

Two of the biggest soundtracks of the fall have hit in successive days. Yesterday it was the full track list for Karen O & The Kids’ soundtrack to “Where The Wild Things Are,” today it’s the various artists involved in Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, “Whip It,” a roller derby coming-of-age story starring Ellen Page.

As previously reported, The Section Quartet, known for their orchestral covers of popular hits from The Postal Service, Radiohead, Muse, Soundgarden, Linkin Park, Oasis, etc.

More photos and a new poster has been unveiled for Drew Barrymore’s roller-derby-dramedy “Whip It” which is set to debut at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

The film centers on Bliss Cavendar — played by Ellen Page in her first post-“Juno” role — a typical small-town Texan teenager who is an aspiring tomboy who is comically misunderstood by her parents and made to compete in beauty pageants by her faded debutante mom (Marcia Gay Harden).

First up is this awesome candid photo of Lars Von Trier and a bloody Charlotte Gainsbourg smiling on the set of his film “Antichrist,” which hits U.S. theaters in limited release on Oct 23. We already saw this one at Cannes. It’s twisted as fuck and not successful front-to-back, but still worth seeing just to witness the sheer audacity at work.

Zach Galifianakis Set To Join ‘Dinner For Schmucks,’ Drew Barrymore’s ‘Whip It!’ And Ruben Fleischer’s ‘Zombieland’ Moved Up To October 2nd

Zack Galifianakis is in talks to join the cast of Jay Roach’s “Dinner For Schmucks” starring Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd and Lucy Punch. A remake of the French film “Le Diner de Cons” (literally, “The Dinner Of Idiots”), ‘Schmucks’ will center on a weekly dinner party where regular attendees are challenged to bring the most pathetic guy possible with a winner decided and championed at night’s end. Galifianakis will presumably play one of these subjects, a mattress-store assistant manger dating Carrell’s character’s ex-wife, with shooting for the project set to begin this fall for a July 2010 release.

Every year during the Toronto International Film Fest pre-season, a massive slate of new films are set to premiere and when that line-up hits, interesting soundtrack tie-ins are always revealed in the details.

Yesterday we discovered that Drew Barrymore’s rollerskate derby comedy “Whip it!” starring Ellen Page, was tapping the L.A. string players, The Section Quartet to compose its music. Today we uncover that Montreal Franchophone indie rockers Malajube are scoring the new Jay Baruchel film, “The Trotsky.”

You’ll recall a couple months ago that we reported on musician Mark Mothersbaugh’s own admission that Drew Barrymore had hired, then fired him from his music gig on her teen roller derby comedy, “Whip It,” starring Ellen Page.

Fans of Mothersbaugh were put off, but the Devo instrumentalist seemed to laugh off the whole event. Life moves on apparently.

OK, then so who did she hire as a replacement? According to the credits for the film at the Toronto Film Festival, she’s tapped the L.A.

Herzog’s ‘Lieutenant,’ Michael Moore’s ‘Capitalism & Coen Brothers’ ‘Serious Man’ Added To TIFF ’09

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced more films for its 2009 line-up. Tellingly, most of the big ones are “special presentations,” i.e., not world premieres, so expect many of these to make their world premieres at the Venice Film Festival as already speculated by the trades.

The biggest highlights of this small round of announcements (small in length) are:

– Michael Moore’s economic crisis documentary titled, “Capitalism: A Love Story.”
– “Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans,” which is Werner Herzog’s not-a-remake re-imagining of Abel Ferrara’s “Bad Lieutenant,” but this time starring Nicolas Cage in the fucked-up Harvey Keitel role.

Last week, we saw new photos from Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, the roller derby rom com, “Whip It” starring Ellen Page and now a full-on trailer has arrived via Yahoo.

Also featured in the film are Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, rapper Eve, Zoe Bell (“Death Proof”), Alia Shawkat, Ari Graynor (“Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist”), Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern, and Barrymore herself, while musician Landon Pigg will stretch himself by playing a musician who becomes Page’s love interest.

Here’s the first official look at Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It!” starring Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig and Juliette Lewis.

The film centers on Bliss Cavendar (Page), a rebellious 17 year old Texas teenager who signs up to play the brutal and sexy female sport of roller derby against her mother’s (Gay Harden) will, finding friendship and freedom among the bruises and falls.

Page’s character joins the Hurl Scouts roller derby team and, in accordance with the sport’s customs, goes by the alias Babe Ruthless.

So this “music video” is making the rounds of Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat aka Maeby Fünke from “Arrested Development” is making the rounds. Everyone’s asking for a moratorium on this song which is reasonable, but we’re simply sayin’: is it too much for Page to hit the melodies in time with the rhythm? Seriously, Ellen, you like music and gave Jason Reitman the musical “Juno” idea to use the Moldy Peach… oh, right, we get it, nevermind.

‘Imagine That’ Soundtrack Apes Beatles Cover Idea From ‘I Am Sam’

The 2001 film “I Am Sam” featured Sean Penn playing a mentally challenged father trying to win custody of his daughter (precocious Dakota Fanning) and a soundtrack of Beatles covers by Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Nick Cave Grandaddy and a few other respectable artist, and what is it’s long term legacy? “Never go full retard.”

Perhaps the new Eddie Murphy Nickelodeon kids comedy, “Imagine That” will fare better aping the same idea with a more safe-as-milk edge?

Drew Barrymore’s ‘Whip It!’ Starring Ellen Page Due In Theaters October 9

Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It!” has been picked up by Fox Searchlight and will now be released in theaters on October 9th. The film stars Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, and Juliette Lewis and will follow the story of a rebellious Texas teen (Page) who throws in her small town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby. It made our Most anticipated of 2009 list in January.

The film also stars female rapper Eve, Zoe Bell, Alia Shawkat (Maeby from “Arrested Development”), Ari Graynor, and Jimmy Fallon.

Apparently Paula Abdul is another unwilling victim caught on tape in Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno.” Cohen reportedly coerced Abdul for a meeting by claiming to interview for her fictionalized win for Artist Of The Year in Germany. Cohen proceeded by apologizing for a lack of furniture before attempting to conduct his interview. Said Abdul of the encounter: “He snaps his fingers and says, ‘Gardeners!’ And these two Mexican guys come in, and they drop down to all fours.

The Hollywood Reporter has just published a semi dubious piece about what films might play at Cannes Film Festival this year (which runs May 13-24). Most of it is speculation, frankly. It basically breaks down into a) what they’ve already heard rumblings about/what seems poised to appear and b) guess work that any of us could do, c) something in the middle that sounds like “maybe” with not enough info behind it to be 100% legit, but is more than just a guess.

Is Terrence Malick’s ‘The Tree of Life’ And Ellen Page’s ‘Whip It’ Playing Cannes 2009?

Summit [Entertainment] is new to the domestic distribution business. But it is a company with vast international experience that plans to handle 10-12 films in the $15m-$45m budget range a year. Its Cannes slate includes Terrence Malick’s drama The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt, and it already has output deals for its own productions in France, Germany, UK and Scandinavia.

Then word on Ellen Page’s “Whip It!” which is being directed by Drew Barrymore; surely if this one plays, it will be out of competition.
