Ariana Debose reminded us that “Angela Bassett did the thing.” The Oscars were an “Everything Everywhere All At Once” celebration. There were great new shows such as “The Last of Us” and “Poker Face.” Taylor Swift and Beyonce were going on massive tours. Life was good!

It’s been over 146 days since the Writer’s Guild of America went on strike after failing to come to a new contract with Hollywood’s studios, networks, and streamers. Over four months the AMPTP, which represents the Hollywood media companies, not only saw the WGA picket their studio lots and headquarters, but the Screen Actors Guild joined them. It has been the first dual strike since 1960 and has brought production in Hollywood to almost a complete halt.

Though Tony Gilroy has been a staple in Hollywood for decades already, you could make the argument the filmmaker is at his most powerful right now, especially after the success of his “Star Wars” series, “Andor.” In fact, during the ongoing WGA strike, Gilroy has been one of the most vocal supporters of the union and its fight against the studios. And in a recent picket line speech, Gilroy proved that he is one of the best advocates for the various writers in Hollywood.

Massive release date changes were fairly commonplace over the past few years, as we watched the COVID pandemic shift entire distribution strategies for film studios. Now, it appears the WGA Strike has finally shown its impact on film releases, at least over at Disney, as the studio delays some of the biggest films on its schedule including new “Avengers,” “Star Wars,” and “Avatar” films.

This week saw the Writers Guild of America call a strike after they couldn’t reach a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, which led to a vote for work stoppage for its 11,500+ members across the film, television, and streaming mediums. Writers are seeking fair compensation, job security, and salaries over gig positions and to block the disruptive use of A.I. in the industry. This has led to multiple shows like “Hacks” to pause production, but it’s now moved into the realm of blockbuster filmmaking as well.
