Wedding movies are a lot like wedding cakes: usually delicious, satisfying and a tad overstuffed. So it’s nice to get a slice of that savory formula in “We Broke Up,” writer/director Jeff Rosenberg‘s entry to the Wedding genre.

What a weird time for movies. It feels like we’re in the limbo period with theaters slowly reopening (in a move that still at this point seems too soon), and big-budget films such as March’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” and this month’s “Mortal Kombat” are released as many of us continue to watch these made for the big screen films at home. Pre-COVID, April had begun to be a light starting date for blockbuster season with more and more high profile films being released just as spring was truly hitting us, and just as was the case last year, this April shows a different line up than what we may be used to.

Love’s defining moment meets the end of a decade-long relationship in “We Broke Up.” The film’s contrasting views on the subject of romance present a broad picture of what is, could be, and might have been. Jeff Rosenberg, who co-wrote “Broke’ with Laura Jacqmin, highlights the usual tropes while turning them on their collective heads with this creative take on the usual romantic comedies. As a director, Rosenberg relies on his experience with series such as “Veep” to keep timing just right.
