The long-running collaboration between Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik (“Chopper,” “Killing Them Softly”)and celebrated musicians Nick Cave and Warren Ellis is three films deep now with a fourth on the way. Cave and Ellis —who record as part of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, but also on their own as a duo—scored Dominik’s second film, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” (2007), and now have made two music documentaries in a row with the filmmaker.

New Zealand-born Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik might be on the precipice of a banner year. His long-awaited Marilyn Monroe film starring Ana de Armas, “Blonde,” just received an NC-17 rating from the Film Ratings board, something of a first for Netflix, and should make its world premiere later this year (likely Venice, since Netflix avoids Cannes). But that’s not all the filmmaker has coming this year, as he’s also delivering a Nick Cave doc called “This Much I Know To Be True.”

If you ever wondered about the color and shape of grief, it is black and white, and three-dimensional: an indescribably beautiful, shatteringly painful object. It is Andrew Dominik‘s Nick Cave documentary “One More Time With Feeling.” The cause of the film’s grief (because it is not just Cave’s, it is his wife’s, his friends’, it is Dominik’s, and it seems to inform every silky move of Benoit Debie and Alwin Kuchler’s superlative, necessary 3D photography) is the death of Cave’s 15 year-old son Arthur, in a fall from a cliff near his Brighton home in July of last year, and everything in the film, even the parts that are not about him and the loss of him, are about him and the loss of him.

Hard to say, but pretty much all the tracks from White Lunar, the new, two-disc compilation album of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ soundtrack work that feature music from “The Road,” have leaked (we gave you a first listen a few weeks ago).

Though it seems doubtful if a separate disc is coming out as even something like the soundtrack to “Up In The Air” (which hits in December) is already listed (without details) on Amazon and meanwhile there is no mention of a ‘Road’ score, so this might be all we’re going to get (and there might not be that much more as it is, “The Road,” uses a lot of the same themes repetitively, though not quite to the mantra-like effect of Ellis and Cave’s “Assassination of Jesse James” score).

And yes, there is incredibly haunting and funereal music from “The Proposition” (which Cave also wrote the screenplay for) and the phenomenal “The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward John Ford,” but there is also new music to “The Road,” that doesn’t hit theaters now until November 25 (we saw it during TIFF and thought it was bleak, but beautiful and heartwrenching at times).

Continue reading Nick Cave and Warren Ellis to Release Soundtrack Anthology In September; You’ll Hear ‘The Road’ Score Early at The Playlist.

Apparently after the success of “Gladiator,” Russell Crowe commissioned goth rocker and fellow Australian Nick Cave to pen a sequel to the film.

If you’re surprised remember that Cave is no dilettante or stranger to film work, and we don’t mean just writing scores. As far back as 1989’s Wim Wenders’ classic, “Wings of Desire” he was composing soundtrack songs (and his band the Bad Seeds cameo-ed in the film) and his work extends far beyond just music having written the screenplays to “The Proposition,” “Ghosts… of the Civil Dead,” and the upcoming, “Death Of A Ladies Man,” all for Aussie director John Hillcoat who is directing the upcoming anticipated 2009 film, “The Road” starring Viggo Mortensen (and naturally, Cave and his recent partner Warren Ellis are writing what’s sure to be another haunting and elegiac score).
