With November quickly passing by, we are about to be in the thick of awards season. And one of the films that is expected to make some noise is Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here.”

‘I’m Still Here’ Review: Walter Salles Renders Brazilian Injustice As Bland Historical Drama [Venice]

Over 30 minutes of Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here” before its inciting incident, a 1971 apprehension of ex-congressman Rubens Paiva from his home by Brazil’s military dictatorship occurs. Any time before then is not entirely a waste, given Salles has a keen eye for how humanity finds the means to thrive amidst oppression. The film’s opening shot sets up this coexistence neatly as Fernanda Torres’ Eunice Paiva floats off the beach, and a helicopter disrupts her relaxing moment as it whirrs by.

With lensing already underway on Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road,” the project has now topped off its cast with the stellar inclusions of Steve Buscemi, Elisabeth Moss, Terrence Howard, Alice Braga (“Predators”) and the little known Danny Morgan, as well with the confirmed involvement of Tom Sturridge.

No word yet on who the thespians will portray but they’re great additions to an already exciting project. Adapted for the screen by Salles’s “Motorcycle Diaries” scribe José Rivera, the iconic Beat Generation work follows the story of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, surrogates for Kerouac and Neal Cassady to be played by Sam Riley and Garret Hedlund, as they journey across the North American landscape in pursuit of self-knowledge and experience.

Little known British actor and Robert Pattinson BFF Tom Sturridge has been added to the cast of Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel “On The Road.”

The actor joins the talented group of Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams who’ll all play a variety of supporting characters from the defining Beat Generation work with Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund playing leads Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, surrogates for Kerouac and Neal Cassady respectively, who journey across the North American landscape in pursuit of self-knowledge and experience.

Is there a way we could possibly anticipate Walter Salles’ long-gestating adaptation of “On The Road” — which already stars Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley and Garret Hedlund — any more than we already do?

The answer apparently is hell yes as Deadline just reported that Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams have been added to the cast.

While the younger cast are playing the principals of the seminal Beat Generation novel — Riley will star as Jack Kerouac’s alter ego Sal Paradise, Hedlund has been cast as Neal Cassady surrogate Dean Moriarty, Stewart has confirmed that she will play Mary Lou and Dunst will be playing Camille (Cassady’s wife) — Mortensen will play Old Bull Lee who is the William S.

How we missed this initial news is beyond us and we’re all a little bit embarrassed.

Somehow while closely tracking Walter Salles’ long-gestating adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s iconic Beat-Generation novel, “On the Road” — which will finally shoot this summer and now stars Kristen Stewart, Kristen Dunst, “Tron Legacy” and “Friday Night Lights” star Garrett Hedlund, and Sam Riley (“Control”) — we missed the fact that the Brazilian filmmaker known for “The Motorcycle Diaries” signed on to a project called “Our Wild Life” in March (maybe we missed it in SXSW pre-madness?).

Kirsten Dunst has added yet another intriguing project to her growing slate of films. The actress has joined Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley & Garret Hedlund in Walter Salles’ adaptation of the beat generation classic “On The Road.”

The project, which has spent years in development and even spawned a Salles’ directed documentary about his journey to bring the book to the big screen, “In Search Of On The Road” has had a revolving door of talent at various points including Matthew McConaughey, Russell Crowe, Brendan Fraser, Mira Sorvino and Ashley Judd.

Kristen Stewart Offered Walter Salles’ ‘On The Road’ Before ‘Twilight’ Fame, Stayed On Board Throughout Project’s Development Struggles

Walter Salles has come out in what seems to be a… sort of mild defense about casting Kristen Stewart in his adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road,” revealing that the actress has been enthusiastically attached to the project for over two years now.

In a statement by Salles through the Brazilian media, the director noted that he had offered Stewart the role before her ‘Twilight’ fame after seeing her small, but impressive performance in Sean Penn’s “Into The Wild,” adding that she “remained faithful to the project during the entire time that the film sought funding.”

Salles also described Stewart as someone that “knows the book [by] Kerouac in depth” and that she “could be starring in projects with budgets much bigger, but made the choice to participate in an independent film, produced by a French company.” While Stewart gets a bad rap because of “Twilight” — her acting has definitely been over scrutinized because of these films — it’s not surprising to hear the actress, who does generally choose interesting roles in between the vampire soap opera, has been dedicated to this role for a quite some time.

Update: Nice, THR has confirmed the entire cast and yes, it’s the same people below. The film is set to start shooting in August and it will have a relatively small $25 million dollar budget.

As we reported recently, Focus Features are off this project and now French production banner MK2 has the rights and will produce in conjunction with Film 4 in the U.K. and Videofilmes in Brazil. No word if it will shoot in black and white as Salles originally suggested it must.

Wednesday night, the San Francisco International Film Festival presented its annual Founder’s Directing Award to director Walter Salles, known for his films, “The Motorcycle Diaries,” 1998’s Best Foreign Language Film winner “Central Station” and “Dark Water.” The main topic of discussion, however, was Salles’ proposed and long-in-the-works production and adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road.”

The evening was built around a work-in-progress screening of “In Search of On the Road,” which is the Salles-directed documentary about his own journey to get the “possible film” (as he repeatedly referred to it) of “On the Road” made.

Here’s a project we thought we’d never hear about again — the long-gestating adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal 1957 beat generation novel, “On The Road” about a cross-country bohemian odyssey.

The novel has been stuck in development for almost three decades. Francis Ford Coppola optioned the book back in the 1970s, but in August, 2005, the filmmaker — along with Focus Features and Coppola’s American Zoetrope who were co-developing the project — hired “The Motorcycle Diaries” director Walter Salles and screenwriter José Rivera to helm and adapt the novel (btw, Focus tell us they are now no longer involved).

Walter Salles Returns With ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ Scribe For ‘American Rust’

Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles is finally returning after a lost in the wilderness period.

His 1998 film “Central Station” was so fantastic it earned not only an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Film, but also a Best Actress nod for its female protagonist Fernanda Montenegro (run don’t walk if you’ve never seen this film). Then in 2004, he delivered what we humbly submit as one our favorite films of the decade in “The Motorcycle Diaries,” with Gael García Bernal portraying a young Che Guevara far before his time as a Cuban revolutionary — the picture is a luminous portrait of a thoughtful soul waking up to the consciousness of the planet and the suffering of humanity.

TIFF Review: Walter Salles’ ‘Linha De Passe’

Like many foreign directors who get tempted by the allure of Hollywood, Walter Salles fell off when he got to direct his first American film. One of Brazil’s greatest directors (“Central Station,” “The Motorcycle Diaries”), Salles made his first major misstep when he took on the impersonal horror remake “Dark Waters,” with Jennifer Connelly completely bereft of his intimate touches (a film anyone could have directed, really).

Maybe this detour made him rethink his career, but either way, Salles returns to his homeland (and an old collaborator in Daniela Thomas, the films co-director; they did two short previously) and the rich stories from the desperate lives of those that live in the São Paulo favela slums; a sad locale that’s feature in Brazilian films often.

Toronto Film Festival ’08 Announces Cannes-Heavy Line-Up

The 33rd edition of the annual Toronto International Film Festival has announced it’s line-up and like Variety notes, the schedule looks a lot like the crop of films that was at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year in May.

The first film that comes to mind is Steven Soderberg’s polarizing “Che,” but unfortunately that won’t be appearing at TIFF. Ok, how about the second-most anticipated film from the Croisette, Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York”?

Cannes: Music Edition – Oldham In Reichardt’s ‘Wendy & Lucy,’ Santaolalla For Salles’ ‘Lina’; More

The Cannes Film Festival is in full swing and they’ve been kind enough to post all their film press information online which has made our job that much easier (thanks!). Yes, Indiana Jones is plastering it’s shit all over the place, but it’s not even in competition and there’s a lot of more interesting films there worth mentioning.

It’s been two years since Kelly Reichardt directed Will “Bonnie Prince Billy” Oldham in the understated indie classic, “Old Joy,” but the two will work together again her latest film, “Wendy & Lucy.” The mostly hirsute indie rocker will play the so-far nebulous character of “Icky.” Yo La Tengo wrote the serene score to “Old Joy,” but it’s unknown so far if she’ll be tapping any indie-friendly bands to goose her scenes so far (plus YLT will be busy with Greg Mototalla).

“Paris Je T’aime” Stars Everyone; Soundtrack Scores Feist

The film,”Paris Je T’aime” features every known director and actor in the movie industry. Ok, not actually, but sort of. The collection of love-letter vignettes about and in an around the city of lights was originally based around the 20 municipal boroughs of Paris (arrondissements) – one short film per borough – however, two of the shorts could not be properly integrated into the film, so the final film has 18 shorts.
