Reports peg “The Social Network” costing Sony $40-$60 million, which means this number one opening should be more than solid. But then you have to consider prints and advertising – a movie about angry nerds staring at computer screens and occasionally yelling at each other with maximum verbosity doesn’t sell itself. The picture might count as “relevant” and “important” but with a likely costly Oscar campaign coming, Sony’s going to pray this has enough legs to get to $100 million and not settle for $60m.

Weekend Box Office: Shia LeBeouf Now Has Six Straight No. 1 Movies… Who Let This Happen?

“Money Never Sleeps” indeed. Who takes the credit for the “Wall Street” sequel opening? As little as this might mean ($60 million domestic seems like the ceiling for latter-day Oliver Stone), it’s a victory when studios can get a September release to an opening around $20 million. Credit to the headliners – the combination of one-time heavy hitter Michael Douglas in his signature role (akin to Stallone returning to Rocky or Rambo) and box office kid dynamo Shia LeBeouf likely meant a safe bet for curious viewers, in addition to fans of the $43 million-grossing first film twenty-three years ago.

Necessary Or Unnecessary: Belated Sequels Delivered Way After The Fact

This December’s “Tron Legacy” has a dubious distinction: it is a sequel that comes a staggering 28 years after the first film, which must be close to a record. And yet, despite the original proving something of a flop on its release, people seem to be clamoring over the sequel. Whether this borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80s (to borrow a phrase from James Murphy) converts into a box-office smash remains to be seen, but it’s not like Disney is the only one in town trying the trick.

A variety of options for mass consumption this week at the multiplex with three films opening wide. First up is Oliver Stone‘s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” which follows his last two films “W” and “World Trade Center” in his quest to forever be at the center of the zeitgeist of America. He might have a more solid hit on his hands here, given the hot stars, subject matter and recent publicity for Michael Douglas‘ health issues.

Oliver Stone Told Shia LaBeouf To Go F Himself Over Suggested ‘Wall Street 2’ Line

Shia LaBeouf never one to shy away from giving frank copy about his past work with legendary directors (regarding Steven Spielberg’s work in “Indiana Jones 4 and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”: “He’s done so much great work that there’s no need for him to feel vulnerable about one film. But when you drop the ball you drop the ball”) and less than legendary ones (“[Michael Bay] went so big that it became too big, and I think you lost the anchor of [Transformers 2], ya know, human-on-human contact”) shared a gem about his work with Oliver Stone in the upcoming “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”

“We’re in the Adirondacks, and Josh Brolin and I are shooting this bike scene,” the actor told the press assembled at the Wall Street sequel’s premiere.

Review: ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ Is Messy But Still Entertaining

As soon as that dopey 75th Anniversary version of the 20th Century Fox logo dissipates, the first sounds we hear in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” are of a prison gate opening, and someone shuffling through it. It’s followed up by a good gag: Michael Douglas, as Gordon Gekko, the role that nabbed him a Best Actor Academy Award oh-so-many moons ago, collecting his personal belongings, having intoned to him gravely by a prison guard, things like “A money clip with no money in it” and a briefcase-sized cellular telephone.

‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ Soundtrack Features David Byrne, Brian Eno & That’s Pretty Much It

It it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That seems to be the approach by Oliver Stone when it comes to the soundtrack to his forthcoming sequel, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”

The original film featured a couple of tracks from David Byrne and Brian Eno’s excellent album “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts” as well the Talking Heads classic “This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody)” and for the sequel, Stone has pretty much gone wall-to-wall Byrne/Eno.

Jeremy Irons Latest Addition To All-Star ‘Margin Call’ Cast

Close to two years after the collapse of Lehmann Brothers, Hollywood is starting to respond to the financial crisis that shook the world at the end of 2008. Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” hits in September after middling reviews at Cannes, and a handful of other projects, from HBO’s “Too Big To Fail” to an adaptation of the stage play “Enron” are all in the works. But one of the most promising is the drama “Margin Call.”

The picture, which is currently filming, follows eight people at a financial firm during the first 24 hours of the crisis, and already has a promising cast on board, including Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Stanley Tucci, Mary McDonnell and Penn Badgley (“Gossip Girl,” apparently).

Oliver Stone’s capitalist epic “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” had great intentions, a drama film taking place during the economic meltdown and stock market crash of recent years. Stone felt like he had to revisit the Gordon Gecko character and say something about the dangers of greed this time with Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf, Carey Mulligan, Josh Brolin and Frank Langella. Following the uneven “W.” and “World Trade Center,” fans were intrigued with something more personal to Stone, and people came in with the mindset that if he got the first one right, how could he screw up the second?

This morning, Moviefone brings us two clips from the new Oliver Stone stock-drama, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” This will be our first look at how things turned out, not counting the trailer, which could be not representative of the movie at all. So what’s the consensus?

Well, if money were able to watch these clips, it might actually fall asleep (we know, too easy). There’s no point in being harsh on this film, but the clips are mostly generic and dull.

The 2010 Cannes Film Festival has been announced and there aren’t that many surprises. Very few American films (as we assumed) and so far, no cosmic relationship epic that everyone is salivating for.

The ‘On The Croisette’ Twitter feed says that Terrence Malick’s “Tree Of Life” is still incomplete, “Malick is NOT ready, although the committee saw a “copy.” Anything could happen in the coming weeks…” indieWire’s sources however say the film will not be completed in time; “An industry insider who is not connected with the film told the site last night that it is not finished and won’t screen at the festival.” Color us not entirely shocked.

Just a few more days to go until the official lineup for the 63rd Annual Cannes Film Festival is unveiled, but speculation continues to run rampant in what is being called a “very difficult, complicated year” by festival director Thierry Fremaux.

First up, what we can tell you is Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter,” Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” and Gus Van Sant’s still untitled new film (once called, “Restless“) are definitely not going to be headed to the south of France.

‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ Headed To Cannes?

The Internet is clucking in full force over the confirmed news earlier today that that Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” would be the opening film of the upcoming Cannes Film Festival and in some cases, how potentially lame this news is (obviously some sites are all for it).

Some are worried about what this signals for Cannes, but really it’s just par for the course. Last year, Pixar’s “Up” opened the festival and generally the opener is a shiny tentpole utilized to garner more attention to the festival and especially the out of competition films are the same — “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls” and “Kung Fu Panda” in 2008, “Ocean’s Thirteen” and “U2 3D” in 2007, “The Da Vinci Code” opening the fest in 2006, etc.

‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ Release Bumped From April 23rd To September 24th

Fox has bumped the upcoming Oliver Stone film “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” from April 23rd all the way to September 24th.

The film, a sequel to Stone’s ’80s classic “Wall Street,” has already had a handful of trailers and posters for the film hit the web. While the teaser trailer didn’t do much for us, the longer international trailer worked much better, and pointed toward a solid B-movie cautionary tale (as long as it doesn’t take itself too seriously).

‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ International Trailer Works Much Better But Maybe Reveals Too Much?

After the teaser trailer left a bad taste in our mouth, with its heavily cliched dialogue and awful score, we had pretty much written off “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”. However, with the arrival of the international trailer, our interest is back up, though with reservations.

This two-and-half-minute plus trailer thankfully ditches the awful score from the teaser and instead takes a page from Martin Scorsese’s handbook and sets the entire thing to the Rolling Stone’s “Sympathy For The Devil.” We also get a much better look at what to expect from the film, and the hint that (surprise, surprise) Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) isn’t as reformed after his stint in prison than we might expect.

“Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” Oliver Stone’s sequel to his somewhat iconic eighties portrait of unbridled ambition, gained some buzz late last week when the teaser trailer and a one-sheet landed online. Response has been mixed, but we didn’t think much of it. Anyway, another one-sheet has arrived and the only difference is that the impeccably tailored Shia LaBeouf is now standing beside Michael Douglas instead of sitting. Meh. “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” will try to line Stone’s pockets on April 23rd.

‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ Teaser Lands And Teaches Us That Money Doesn’t Make You Rich

So the teaser for Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” has debuted on IMDB of all places, which is a great place to put it if you want no one to see it (no embed codes, no front page placement), but judging by the ninety second clip, we wouldn’t blame them.

Set to a hilarious and awfully portentous, beat heavy score, the brief lines of dialogue we’re given seem to indicate that screenwriter Allan Loeb doesn’t know a heavy-handed cliche he hasn’t already met.

Mel Gibson To Spend ‘Summer Vacation’ In Veracruz

It looks like 2010 is shaping up to be Mel Gibson’s comeback year. In addition to starring in “Edge Of Darkness” and “The Beaver”, it was just announced this morning that Gibson will be directing Leonardo DiCaprio in an “unsparing” William Monahan scripted Viking epic due to shoot next fall.

In all of this chatter, the comment made last week by the governor of Veracruz Fidel Herrera that Gibson would be returning the region to work on a film has largely been forgotten.

– It’s a few days old, but we missed this story completely, and it’s a glacially slow news day — Peter Sarsgaard has announced he’s going to be appearing in the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz spy movie “Wichita.” At the end of a lengthy and excellent interview at Movieline, the actor said, “I’m going to Boston in about a week to do ‘Wichita.’ It’s a great script; I’m the foil to Tom Cruise’s character. It’s really fun and it’s got action movie stuff in it, obviously, but it’s funny.” Does ‘foil’ mean villain, or straight man?

The Gray Lady ran a story yesterday on Oliver Stone‘s return to Wall Street (both physical and literal). The piece confirms the starry cast (Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Carey Mulligan, Frank Langella, Josh Brolin, and Susan Sarandon) and Stone mentions how some people (assholes) were inspired to head to Wall Street back in the eighties after seeing “Wall Street” and how those same people “didn’t get it.” The piece also mentions Stone and Douglas recently having had dinner with an ex-country-club-con, Samuel D.

Let’s give ourselves a little shine here. Something that we educatedly-guessed and have known about ever since TMZ posted a video earlier this summer: Josh Brolin is playing the villain in “Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps,” Oliver Stone’s belated sequel to his classic, “greed is good,” capitalist fat cats out of control, ’80s picture.

Javier Bardem dropped out of the role earlier this year and and in July Nikki Finke reconfirmed that he left the project.
