Rick Riordan‘s “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” was one of the biggest YA fantasy series of the 2000s, capitalizing on the road paved by the “Harry Potter” series. But the 2010 and 2013 films based on the series didn’t really connect with either critics or audiences. Now it’s time to see if the series format works better for the source material, as Disney+ has a “Percy Jackon And The Olympians” series on the way, ready to debut on the streamer on December 20.

Wilson stars as a father on the mission in the new original Paramount+ movie “Secret Headquarters.” Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the duo behind the recent Netflix superpower-adjacent actioner “Project Power,” direct the straight-to-streaming movie about a kid who suspects his dad, played by Wilson, might be a superhero.

“The Adam Project” is the latest Netflix film to come from the Ryan Reynolds Industrial Complex (after 2021’s gimmicky “Red Notice”), and it feels fair to applaud it for what it resists. It doesn’t cram movie pop culture references down the audience’s throat; it keeps the Reynolds character’s meta-like winks to a minimum; it lets Reynolds’ fast-talking, incorrigibly charismatic smart-ass ways seem based in a complicated humanity instead of a contractual obligation from the lead star’s power. Much of this restraint makes “The Adam Project” a welcome surprise from director Shawn Levy (who previously helmed Reynolds’ “Free Guy,” another Reynolds-overload vehicle), and allows its earnest emotional core to shine through.

We’ve all dreamt of going back in time to talk to our younger self, but what about going back in time to get help from our younger self? That’s the concept of “The Adam Project,” a high-concept popcorn movie by director Shawn Levy (“Stranger Things”) and Ryan Reynolds. The pair are becoming quite the team. After working together on “Free Guy,” they immediately went back at it with “The Adam Project,” a film about a man who travels back in time to get help from his younger self to confront their late father.
