Ron Howard is a critically-acclaimed and Academy Award-winning director. Looking at his filmography, it’s hard to find something that he hasn’t done as his decades-long career spans multiple genres and mediums, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that his next upcoming project, “Thirteen Lives,” is a film based on a true story.

“Thirteen Lives” tells the story of the 12 junior association football (soccer) players and their assistant coach who were stuck in the Tham Luang caves in Thailand for over two weeks in the summer of 2018.

With the world on fire and its people on edge, awards season has become particularly heated this year, and the outrage and smear campaigns are flying fast and furious. The narrative of late, appears to be film critics (myself included), perturbed that well-crafted, beloved films like “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Widows,” “Leave No Trace,” “First Reformed” and “Eighth Grade” are being overlooked while problematic populist fare, that tends to put conveniently revisionist spin on history, like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Green Book” are winning Golden Globes and eating up nomination in the Oscar-auguring guilds.

“Green Book” marks Viggo Mortensen‘s 50th silver screen credit to be released. The diligent actor is constantly looking for the unknown, that project that will challenge him, mentally and emotionally. Since retiring his crown as Aragorn in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, he’s had a chance to do just that: branch out. “Eastern Promises,” “The Road,” “A Dangerous Method,” “The Two Faces of January,” and “Captain Fantastic” are all examples of diverse parts that showcase the actor’s daring choices and range.

We’re almost at the finish line of the nominations phase for the race to the 89th Academy Awards. On Jan 13th voting will end and there will be that always too quiet wait until Jan. 24th when the nominations are revealed and everyone overthinks every category and every nomination. In the meantime, the Golden Globes will try and wield some influence this Sunday, the Producers Guild and BAFTA will both announce their nominees on Jan.

Based on Christopher Hampton’s acclaimed 2002 play “The Talking Cure,” the film will center on the relationship between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Russian-Jewish patient Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), who ultimately causes a rift between Jung and mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) but also catalyses strong findings in regards to Jungian psychoanalysis.

Little is known about the project right now, but original scriber Steve Knight has penned the sequel. The film is already set up at Focus Features and they hope to get it in front of cameras next winter. Though the news seems to be coming out of left field, the film has actually been in the works since the spring of 2009.

It will be a wide release. We actually liked the post-apocalyptic film, a two-hander starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee, but not everyone does. Even Indiewire, generally sympathetic to arty indie films, the ilk of which the picture belongs to, called it “long and dreary.”

This was in a Variety article from two days ago, which we read, but somehow glazed over.
