1999 was a strange year for pop culture. On the one hand, there was all this fear about Y2K and the possible end of the world. Then, on the other hand, pop culture was all over the place with a film like “American Pie” reviving the “Porky’s”-esque, male-driven, R-rated sex comedy genre, the oft-discussed Woodstock ‘99 festival debacle shocking everyone, and pop music by folks like ‘NSYNC and Britney Spears providing the soundtrack.

It’s safe to say that we are currently in the heyday of at-home cinema. Not only have streaming services like Netflix given us endless binge-ability, but Hulu has made it possible to rewatch TV episodes the day after they air, and with Amazon you can instantly rent or buy just about any movie, anytime, anywhere. Compare that with just a couple years ago when bookcases had to be handed over to shelves of DVDs and choosing a movie for the evening meant making a trip to Blockbuster (which, if you were curious, still exists).

A new “Blair Witch Project” movie is out on Friday. Two months ago, we didn’t even know there was a new “Blair Witch Project” movie — instead, we thought that “You’re Next” and “The Guest” director Adam Wingard had made a found-footage horror film called “The Woods.” But it was this summer when Lionsgate actually revealed at Comic-Con the movie was “Blair Witch,” a sequel/reboot to the original 1999 pic, and one that reportedly does far more justice to it than 2000’s ‘Book Of Shadows‘ did (look for our review tomorrow).

But as at the end of this month, which is essentially the end of this week, the last VCR manufacturer in the world is going to cease production. Right now, somewhere in the bowels of Japan’s Funai Electric Company, the last sprockety thingie is being attached to the last spring-loaded whatsit in the last brand-new VHS cassette tape recording device that will ever roll off any production line.
