“The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” established the template that proved that despite Ryan Murphy‘s usual tendency toward the melodramatic, he could treat real-life material with some degree of depth and insight. We’ll see if that trend continues with the next chapters of the anthology series, but the success of the first iteration has certainly started attracting some big names to his roster.

Penélope Cruz will join Edgar Ramírez and Darren Criss in the third season of “American Crime Story.” The episodes will dive into the true story and mystery of Andrew Phillip Cunanan, an American serial killer who murdered at least five people, including fashion designer Gianni Versace, on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion during a three-month period in 1997.

Ryan Murphy of “American Horror Story” fame has begun casting for “Versace: American Crime Story.” Variety reports that Edgar Ramirez will play the lead character, Gianni Versace, whilst Darren Criss will play the role of his killer, Andrew Phillip Cunanan.

This will be the first time Edgar Ramirez enters the fold of American television, most recently appearing in “Gold“, alongside Matthew McConaughey.

Winner of nine Primetime Emmy awards, and nearly universal acclaim, FX had a sensation this year with “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” and an anthology concept that proved to be a winning format. The network is already gearing up for season two, that is expected to bring many of the cast members of ‘The People v. O.J.’ for an entirely new story set against the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina.
