Some might know him as the Fire Guy or just Ryan Howard. However, B.J. Novak is much more than just one of the stars of “The Office.” And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, Novak stops by to talk about his new dark comedy, “Vengeance,” which marks his feature directorial debut.

“Vengeance,” tells the story of a writer slash podcaster from New York City who, through some weird mixup, finds himself at a funeral in rural Texas where he hopes to develop a premise for his next big podcast.

Tribeca 2022 Festival Preview: 24 Films & TV Series To Watch

Last year, Robert De Niro, co-founder of the Tribeca Festival, stated, “The Tribeca Film Festival was born out of our mission to bring people together in the aftermath of 9/11.” With that mission still leading the charge, the annual festival is returning to New York this week, June 8-19, to bring artists together and allow them a platform to grow their audience and their network. With films from 40 different countries, we believe the festival will do just that again this year.

The full lineup includes 109 feature films, some of which we’ve seen in previous festivals such as “A Love Song” which was an official selection at Sundance, “Beba” which first premiered at TIFF last fall, and “Cha Cha Real Smooth” which we fell in love with when it took Sundance by storm earlier this year.

Danny Trejo B-Movie Action Flick ‘Vengeance’ Gets A Red-Band Trailer

No, there’s no red-band trailer for Robert Rodriguez’ “Machete” just yet, but a red-band for another Danny Trejo action vehicle, “Vengeance,” has surfaced.

And hell, if this doesn’t define what a red-band trailer is all about then we don’t know what would. Filled with sex, drugs, plenty of gun violence, and general Danny Trejo badassery, the trailer exhibits the film’s apparently super cheap production values to aid telling its story (which we’re guessing there’s not too much of, but why expect that?) of an, oddly enough, vengeful cop.

TIFF Photos: ‘Good Heart,’ ‘Mother,’ ‘Vengeance,’ ‘Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky’

Every year at the Toronto Int. Film Festival there’s always a good little indie that comes out of nowhere — and sadly some of them never seem to see the light of day, much like “$5 A Day” with Alessandro Nivola and Christopher Walken from ’08.

Hopefully, one of these indies that doesn’t go the way of the dodo, is a picture called, “Good Heart.” Now we have no way of knowing whether it’s good or not, but it does star the great Brian Cox and Paul Dano.

‘The Informant,’ ‘Bright Star,’ ‘Precious,’ Ricky Gervais’ ‘The Invention of Lying’ Added To TIFF ’09 Line-up.

Sweet. The Toronto International Film Festival has announced more of its 2009 line-up including opening and closing night films.

The opening night film is Jon Amiel’s “Creation” starring Paul Bettany and his wife Jennifer Connelly and its essentially a biopic about Charles Darwin. The move is a little strange as TIFF usually opens up with a Canadian-made movie, but as its head programmer said today, “it has been a tradition, but it is not a law.” We honestly have little interest in that picture, but maybe TIFF could change our minds.

The 62 annual Cannes Film Festival is over, we get that, it’s not like we’re clinging on to it or something, but there’s still a lot of films people haven’t seen and ostensibly many of us, including you and I, are going to see them this fall at various film festivals. We decided to dig up a bunch of trailers for Cannes films you probably haven’t seen so far. A few of them aren’t subtitled in English, but it’s still a cool and interesting first-look for most of us.

We didn’t realize this was up already.

We recorded a videoblog (vlog if you like) with FirstShowing’s Alex Billington who diligently recorded like 3-4 video posts at Cannes during his time at the festival (how he managed to find the the energy and time for vlogs, reviews, and regular news is beyond us).

We can’t even remember what’s covered in the conversation (Alex and I talked for 20 minutes before anything was taping too), but it’s probably a decent overview of things we may not have already talked about on the blog like Johnny To’s “Vengeance” which I liked and Alex hated.

Cannes ’09: The Mid-Way Report Card, Is The Festival Not Really Making The Grade?

The 2009 Cannes Film Festival runs, on paper, from May 13-24, but in reality it, really runs from the 14-23, as that’s when the in-competition screenings begin and end. So today is really the mid-way point of the festival and so far, it’s feeling like a weak crop this year (it’s already Tuesday here, we’re in the future). One of the film’s expected to make a mark at the festival, Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist,” did make a splash, but it sounds like it polarized everyone into love or hate it experiences.

Cannes 2009: 24 Posters

Ok, certainly not all of the posters from all the films at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, but FinDeCinema, has 23 of them. We found a 24th in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Air Doll” (“Kuki Ningyo”), which we’re pretty sure we first spotted at Twitch somewhere. We thought it’d be fun to make a big collage. We’ve seen one Cannes film early which is “Drag Me To Hell,” which was not our bag at all, but fans of light and innocuous comical horror will enjoy it we suppose.
