Cinema is a romantic’s medium. To watch a movie is to feel through others, to experience lives and cultures beyond your own or, sometimes, to relate in ways you never could before. The best films invite you to love and care, to believe you’re close to strangers and nestle inside their thoughts, their laughs, their sorrows and their pains. To watch a movie is to become someone else, if for a fleeting moment.

It’s sappy and corny to say as much, but that’s the same with Valentine’s Day.

Box Office: ‘Shutter Island’ Shuts Out ‘Cop Out’ and ‘The Crazies’

It looks like a George Romero remake and a mash-up of ’80s cop-movie cliches were no match for the might of Martin Scorsese’s psychological thriller. “Shutter Island” pulled in another $22.2 million over the weekend, bringing its total within inches of its reported $80 million budget. There’s an argument for art vs. commerce here; Scorsese’s more artistically ambitious (but ultimately flawed) films such as “The Aviator” ($103 million) and “Gangs of New York” ($78 million) have done reasonably well at the box office, with their Oscar prospects boosting their takes.

Box Office: Martin Scorsese Scores Biggest Opening Of His Career With ‘Shutter Island’

And all is right with the world again. After months of “Avatar” domination followed by the thankfully brief reigns of “Dear John” and “Valentine’s Day,” “Shutter Island,” took home a win and a whopping $40 million. Though we’re of two minds on Martin Scorsese’s genre chiller, it’s hard not to cheer when you realize that this is Scorsese’s biggest opening to date, beating even “The Departed” by $14 million.

The filmmaker has made his most lucrative pictures (“The Departed,” “Gangs of New York,” and “The Aviator”) with frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio attached, but it’s interesting to note that his biggest pre-Leo hit was “Cape Fear,” a genre film that is closest in spirit to his latest work.

Box Office: ‘Valentine’s Day’ Beats Out ‘Wolfman’ and ‘Percy Jackson’

We’re not sure who to feel sorrier for: the guys that got dragged along to estrogen-injected marshmallow “Valentine’s Day,” or the women who endured the horrible horror movie “The Wolfman.” Either way, a lot of people deserve medals this weekend, with the February 14th fluff-fest taking first place and a stomach-churning $52.4 million. Apparently, moviegoers are all far better significant others than we are (and far worse cinephiles).

In our in-theaters preview, we predicted a hefty take for “Valentine’s Day,” followed by a swift drop-off.

Harvey Weinstein is convinced “Inglourious Basterds” is going to win the Oscar for Best Picture especially because of the new Oscar preferential voting system. We’d be pretty skeptical if it wasn’t for one acquaintance of ours — a decently known Hollywood actor — who has been saying this for months, and attesting to the fact that their well-connected agent, publicist and reps have been murmuring how the picture is incredibly popular within Hollywood and they too are convinced this will be the case.

We’ll have to wait for next’s week’s release of Scorsese’s latest “Shutter Island” to get too excited about anything new, but the box office should get a big boost this week with three high-profile films opening wide. “Valentine’s Day,” “Percy Jackson,” and “The Wolfman” hit screens nationwide and should conquer the top three slots this weekend. Hopefully you’re too busy building snowpeople or lavishing romance upon someone to contribute. We suspect “V Day” will take the top slot this weekend, but expect it to drop very, very quickly in the coming weeks.

‘Saw VII’ To Be The Last?; ‘Valentine’s Day’ Sequel Already Being Planned & ‘Almost Alice’ Soundtrack Now Streaming

“Saw VII” co-writer Patrick Melton has revealed that the forthcoming entry in horror franchise may be the last. “I think it’s going to end with ‘Saw VII’. I have a very strong feeling its going to end with Saw VII. That’s something we’re debating now,” he told a UK radio show. But he reminds us that “I don’t own the franchise, nor do I run the studio, but I have a feeling, a strong feeling that [the last one is] going to be ‘Saw VII’.” So take that for what’s it worth, but man that thing is a bit of a cash-cow for Lionsgate and they surely don’t want it to end (nor have their ever had to worry about its quality or cred).

Universal Gives Up On ‘The Wolfman’ & Lets The ‘R’-Rating Stand

According the folks over at /Film, the trouble plagued “The Wolfman” has been slapped with an R-rating for “bloody horror, violence and gore.” The odd thing about the announcement is that the news was sent to the website from an enthusiastic PR rep for the film. The way /Film and some other sites are positioning the news is that Universal is supporting Joe Johnston’s artistic vision (yeah, right), but just looking at the troubled production history of the film, we think Universal has had enough and are washing their hands of the whole enterprise.

Michelle Monaghan Joins ‘Due Date’, First Trailer for ‘Valentine’s Day’

– In news that will delight Harry Lockhart fans the world over, Michelle Monaghan is to re-team with “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” co-star Robert Downey Jr. in Todd Phillips’ “Due Date,” where Downey Jr. will play a man desperately trying to return to his pregnant wife (Monaghan) before she gives birth. Zach Galifianakis will play ‘a mismatched traveling companion,’ or, essentially, the John Candy role in “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” We’ve got the script lying around somewhere, but if “The Hangover” is anything to go by, the script will bear almost no resemblance to the finished project anyway…

– We reported a few weeks back that Jesse Eisenberg was likely to play Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s “The Social Network,” and, while talking to MTV on the “Zombieland” press tour, Eisenberg gave an artful non-denial, saying “They are rumors.

Tobey Maguire Teams With Elizabeth Banks For Pre-‘Spider Man 4’ Comedy ‘The Details’

Tobey Maguire is set to star in Jacob Estes’ indie-black-comedy “The Details,” the story of a struggling married couple whose already difficult lives are further complicated by ravenous raccoons burrowing under the sod in their back yard which sparks disagreements that catalyzes a chain reactions of mishaps.

Elizabeth Banks, Ray Liotta, Dennis Haysbert, Anna Friel and Laura Linney are attached to co-star. The project will be Maguire’s last before reprising his role as Peter Parker in “Spider Man 4” where Banks may also appear.

Amy Poehler will executive produce and star in “Lunch Lady,” a Jarret Krosoczka children’s graphic novel series adapted by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern. The story centers on a school cafeteria server who secretly dishes out helpings of justice as she and her assistant investigate wrongdoings.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s (“Bad Santa”) “I Love You Phillip Morris” has been acquired by Consolidated Pictures Group for domestic distribution. The film stars Jim Carrey as a married conman who falls in love with his cellmate, played by Ewan McGregor. It will screen at the Directors’ Fortnight offering at Cannes and has reportedly been given a 2010 Valentine’s Day release, which is interesting to say the least. [Variety]

Rachel Weisz has been loosely attached to play iconic actress Hedy Lamarr in Amy Redford’s indie tale “Face Value.” The film will center on Lamarr’s eccentric life, with a particular focus on her less-publicized second career as a scientist which saw her help create a method of changing frequencies that would be instrumental in modern wireless communications.

News is out from cast member Brandon Routh that Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” will feature hand drawn animation in some action sequences. No confirmation on the exact animation style to be employed yet and so fanboys are freaking the eff out. We’re gonna guess it’s the same style as the comics, geniuses. [Collider via First Showing]

Somehow Al Pacino got cast as the title role in a new “King Lear” adaptation.
