Following last week’s big box-office for a widely varied selection of new films, another diverse crop shows up this week and should keep the box-office hot into Halloween. Looking to kick “Where the Wild Things Are” from its throne are several films aimed at a younger audience from animated action to grisly horror, the young set has many options, almost all of them unappealing and cynical-looking. “Wild Things” hopefully will have the staying power to keep kids hopeful and joyous, but it’s not likely going to reign at the top of the box-office charts again.

Jonathan Parker’s “Untitled,” is an amusing send-up and celebration of the idiosyncrasies and pretentiousness of the modern art world. Adam Goldberg seems born to play the disgruntled and neurotic tortured artist unwilling to compromise an inch and Marley Shelton does a superb job as the vacuous and affected Chelsea art gallerist who falls for his brooding ways.

Hollywood and Fine’s Marshall Fine is mostly on the money (if a little generous) when he says the picture is “a laugh-out-loud satire with a dry-martini wit [that] manages the neat trick of poking wicked fun at the worlds of experimental music and art — from all angles — even as it gives a humorously sympathetic look at the plight of the serious artist working far outside the commercial mainstream.”

Yet where “Untitled” falters and looses its sharp footing is during its second half where it begins leaning too heavily on the sympathetic side of self-serious artists and jettisoning its humorous wit in order to examine notions of why some starve to pursue their passions and why some simply must create as they must breathe oxygen each day.

How odd is the new Cameron Crowe script that’s currently untitled (much like “Almost Famous” was originally scripted as “Untitled”)? Or at least, how different does it sound on the surface, right?

It seems that either Crowe has been doing some traveling, some research or both.

Eventually set in Hawaii surrounding an illegal satellite launch in the skies above the pacific island, the dramedy/rom-com centers on the Defensecon military contractor Brian Gilgrest (Ben Stiller) who has to navigate and juggle the politics of the bosses, the supernatural myths of Hawaii’s spiritual leaders, the emotions for his almost-ex-wife (not cast?
