Streaming giant Netflix has announced more IP-based anime projects are on the way, and they are partnering with Legendary Television for the animated series “Skull Island” and “Tomb Raider.”

“Skull Island” is directly set within Legendary’s Monsterverse that will focus on a crew shipwrecked on the dangerous island that is notably ruled by King Kong, and the upcoming series comes from Austin-based Powerhouse Animation.

The best thing about movie viewing in January is how much time there is to play catch up if you’ve missed much of the prior year. Oscar nominations are right around the corner, and in the interim between now and any Sundance buzz that begins to brew, there’s not much in the way of theatrical releases that are going to catch an avid film fan’s eye. That is, unless you’ve been really looking forward to remakes and sequels of properties such as “Dolittle,” “The Grudge” and “Bad Boys.”

Outside of the “Twilight” franchise, actress Kristen Stewart isn’t very familiar with the world of big-budget filmmaking. However over the next several months, the young actress not only stars in the reboot of the “Charlie’s Angels” franchise, but she also will appear in the underwater action/sci-fi film, aptly titled “Underwater.”

As seen in the trailer for the film, “Underwater” follows a group of researchers that decide to go to the ocean floor, seven miles below the surface.

Ever since she wrapped up her work with the “Twilight” franchise, Kristen Stewart has gone pretty hard on arthouse and auteur fare, adding Olivier Assayas, Woody Allen, Drake Doremus, and Ang Lee to her Rolodex (that’s the old timey word for the contact list on your iPhone, kids). But she hasn’t entirely stepped away from blockbusters. There was “Snow White And The Huntsman” at Universal, and while she bowed out of the sequel, Stewart is heading over to 20th Century Fox for another movie that will bring her back to the multiplex.
