Box Office: ‘Clash of the Titans’ Continues 3D Dominance with $61 Million

Summer got off to an early start with the special-effects-laden snorefest “Clash of the Titans” taking in $61 million at the box office this weekend. It’s not a bad start, especially for a film that should do well overseas, but it’s not a “300”-level success. The Zack Snyder testosterone-fueled film made $71 million in its opening weekend, without getting a boost from 3D tickets (though it did get IMAX money). Plus, “300” was made for a seemingly small $65 million, while “Clash” cost almost twice as much to produce.

Shortcuts: Cronenberg Talks ‘The Matarese Circle’, ‘Gigantic’ Wins Top Prize In Dallas

David Cronenberg recently talked about his project “The Matarese Circle.” He revealed that he has ” spoken to both Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington, and they both want to do it.” The delays of the project has been due to the fact that he is rewriting the script, originally by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (“Wanted”), from scratch and is “under a lot of pressure and [doesn’t] want to screw it up.” Also, he talked about how one of things that drew him to the project in the first was his belief that “when you get too comfortable, you need to scare yourself by trying something you’ve never done before.” [Toronto Star]

Rosemarie DeWitt (“Rachel Getting Married”, TV’s “United States Of Tara”) and Chris Cooper (“The Kingdom”,”Syrianna”) have joined the cast of John Well’s indie drama film, “Company Men.” The film details the lives of three men over the course of a year as the company they work for implements corporate downsizing.

We mention this for a few reasons. One, because Tyler Perry is that silent, but deadly filmmaking force as far as Hollywood is concerned. Put aside for a second whether his films are actually good or not. His films target a very niche (read: black) audience, but man, they do gangbusters at the box office and Hollywood has taken note. Is there really a need for a Shrek 4? As long as their is a need for gold-plated SUV’s, gargantuan-sized mansions and theme parks in your backyard, the answer is yes. As you’ve already heard, Sir Paul McCartney has been asked to write the soundtrack for the soon-to-be 4th edition of the animated excuse to print money. Apparently Macca is a big disciple of the Shrek series that featured his song Bond theme “Live & Let Die” in the 3rd installment.
