But as it turns out, there appear to be some truths to some of the rumors and speculation circulated over the last five years.

Most of it started when the “Blue Velvet” filmmaker was spotted in the offices at Netflix in 2018, presumably taking some meetings, and things subsequently snowballed.

Even though the pandemic has been rough on the film industry, as a whole, Lynch has apparently thrived, as he launched a successful YouTube channel and has been vocal about his newfound artistic endeavors that have very little to do with actual filmmaking. And in a world that is in dire need of good news, Lynch isn’t able to give us any right now.

Beyond that, MacLachlan has had a varied career over the decades that has led him from multiple genres and formats and, depending on the filmmaker, genres within genres. In his latest outing, he rejoins his “Hamlet” co-star Ethan Hawke and director Michael Almereyda for the unique biopic, “Tesla.”

In “Tesla,” MacLachlan plays Thomas Edison with an engaging amount of restraint in a film that pushes narrative barriers.

But yet, ‘The Return’ arrived 25 years after ‘Fire Walk With Me’ (the ‘Twin Peaks’ prequel film) and was immediately embraced by fans, and eventually would go on to be considered one of the best pieces of film/TV over the past decade.

Truly a one-of-a-kind filmmaker, Lynch has wowed audiences with his films and TV series that don’t quite fit in specific genres or structures. He’s someone that constantly keeps a viewer on their toes and always guessing. And that level of unique sensibility extends to his creative process, as outlined by “Twin Peaks” composer Angelo Badalamenti.

And surprisingly, on some of the lists, David Lynch’s third season of “Twin Peaks” ranked highly. No, not as a series, but actually as a film. While Season 3 was clearly released as a series, many saw the way that it was split into episodes as more of a convenience for releasing it and less of a necessity, as the entire show feels like one long film.

In fact, while promoting his latest movie “The Dead Don’t Die,” the filmmaker – eccentric in his own right – did Lynch one better, telling Vulture that the miniseries is, to him, “the best of American cinema of the last decade, probably.”

The declaration came as Jarmusch was reeling off some other memorable films he’s seen of late, a list that includes “Roma,” “Shoplifters” and “BlacKkKlansman.” Expanding on his thoughts, he called the Lynch project “incomprehensible and dreamlike in the most beautiful, adventurous way…a masterpiece.”

Adoration for “Twin Peaks: The Return” seems to have, somewhat remarkably, only grown in the two years since it aired.

Kidding aside, while we may not get a full-on explanation about the inner workings behind the incredibly popular franchise, Part2 Pictures and Metabook are combining for a new documentary that will explain the inspiration behind the death of Laura Palmer, according to The Wrap.

Speaking with IndieWire, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker opened up about “Twin Peaks,” the medium of TV as a whole.

“I loved ‘Twin Peaks,’” Cuarón said. “I wish more shows were as bold as that.”

But just because the filmmaker fell in love with Lynch’s series doesn’t mean that we’ll see the “Roma” writer-director take another stab at the TV medium anytime soon.

The mosaic of characters that the legendary director presented to us was part of a greater whole, one that felt almost impossible to describe.

As Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) finally found his way down the show’s never-ending rabbit hole of colliding cosmos, he did so by finding a way to redeem Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), even by saving her life, seemingly going back in time and changing the tragic events of 1989.

As odd as that may sound, the filmmaker has never been one to explain his work, or even dive deep into how certain scenes or lines were created. Instead, he credits “ideas.” And when it came to the revival of “Twin Peaks,” the director can’t explain where the genesis of the ideas came from. They just presented themselves and that was that.

Yesterday afternoon, the filmmaker continued his “Phantom Thread” promotional run with an absolutely terrific stint answering questions on Twitter through the film’s social media account. Both hilarious and illuminating, the whole thing is worth scrolling through, but we’ve got the highlight below.

As you might expect from questions coming from all over the place on Twitter, they were pretty random and there was a lot of “tell us your favorite” type queries.

If there have been whisper campaigns against certain pictures, it hasn’t yet reached the mainstream, and with no clear frontrunner, it’s actually shaping up to be one of the more interesting Oscar races in recent memory. However, there is one question that has left cinephiles in knots — is David Lynch‘s “Twin Peaks: The Return” a movie or television show?

But perhaps reflecting the inarguable explosion of quality TV over the past decade, and therefore the fact that not any one of us has seen everything, and every one of us has their favorites among stuff that no one else saw, this year that dubious title may just fall to the feature you are about to read.

Back then, music was played on a piano or an organ. Now, some of the world’s greatest composers write scores that can stand as works of art separate to the films they accompany, while often doing so much to make those works memorable. Or filmmakers curate killer compilations of songs familiar and new that can lead to some of movies’ most memorable moments (and an overlooked song being revived).

On the one hand, there are some series which expand beyond the frame of conventional television and are absolutely cinematic in almost every detail of their execution. However, there is enough great television that you can put that material on a separate list, and plenty of fantastic movies that equally deserve the space on their own list, with lots of foreign and small films that could use the love, without being bounced for TV series.
