Keeping up with the subset cult around whispering David Lynch rumors can be a little taxing and trying, but as we know, the filmmaker hasn’t released anything since the transformative “Twin Peaks: The Return” series in 2017. But as it turns out, there appear to be some truths to some of the rumors and speculation circulated over the last five years.

Most of it started when the “Blue Velvet” filmmaker was spotted in the offices at Netflix in 2018, presumably taking some meetings, and things subsequently snowballed.

And surprisingly, on some of the lists, David Lynch’s third season of “Twin Peaks” ranked highly. No, not as a series, but actually as a film. While Season 3 was clearly released as a series, many saw the way that it was split into episodes as more of a convenience for releasing it and less of a necessity, as the entire show feels like one long film.

You can officially mark Jim Jarmusch as being in the camp that considers iconic director David Lynch’s Showtimes series “Twin Peaks: The Return” so cinematic that it transcends the platform of television. In fact, while promoting his latest movie “The Dead Don’t Die,” the filmmaker – eccentric in his own right – did Lynch one better, telling Vulture that the miniseries is, to him, “the best of American cinema of the last decade, probably.”

The declaration came as Jarmusch was reeling off some other memorable films he’s seen of late, a list that includes “Roma,” “Shoplifters” and “BlacKkKlansman.” Expanding on his thoughts, he called the Lynch project “incomprehensible and dreamlike in the most beautiful, adventurous way…a masterpiece.”

Adoration for “Twin Peaks: The Return” seems to have, somewhat remarkably, only grown in the two years since it aired.

It appears that Alfonso Cuarón, like many Playlist readers, is a fan of David Lynch, particularly his latest project, the “Twin Peaks” revival that recently aired on Showtime. Speaking with IndieWire, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker opened up about “Twin Peaks,” the medium of TV as a whole.

“I loved ‘Twin Peaks,’” Cuarón said. “I wish more shows were as bold as that.”

But just because the filmmaker fell in love with Lynch’s series doesn’t mean that we’ll see the “Roma” writer-director take another stab at the TV medium anytime soon.

“Twin Peaks: The Return,” felt for many like this generation’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” It broke the rules of television and Lynch’s vision was so far out, it almost felt like a broadcast from another dimension. The mosaic of characters that the legendary director presented to us was part of a greater whole, one that felt almost impossible to describe.

While it’s been a rough 2017 overall, It’s been a phenomenal year in film. With that being said, below is a list ranking what I believe are the top 20 films of 2017. It was painstakingly difficult cutting my list of 100 to 50, but even harder from 50 to 20. Some notable films that barely missed the cut include: “Wakefield,” “The Lovers,” “Wonder Woman,” “Baby Driver,” “Super Dark Times,” “It,” “Split,” “Personal Shopper,” “Columbus,” “Menashe” “and yes, I left out the fan favorite, “Dunkirk.” I also want to mention that there are films that I have excluded because I have yet to see them, such as: “Phantom Thread,” “The Darkest Hour,” “BPM,” and  “Molly’s Game” just to name a few.

Aliens, robots, holograms, fruit, gods, demons, aquatic mystery creatures and shambling doppelgangers potentially occupied by the spirit of long-disappeared FBI agents trapped between dimensions — yes, it can only be our roundup of the year’s best sex scenes! To be fair, we’ve included a couple that have human participants, but only for form’s sake. Maybe it’s because it’s a global trend, maybe because The Playlist is a hotbed of perverts, but it seems to us the movie and TV year in sex was more than usually characterized by interspecies, mystical, plant-based and/or supernatural sex, and quite a few of the more ostensibly “traditional” sex scenes that impressed us did so for very unsexy reasons (we’re not naming names, but Yorgos Lanthimos).
