Some shows are big cultural hits and juggernauts, and some quietly go on season after season; maybe not a huge critical giant, but there are enough ardent fans to justify their existence. And that’s probably where Apple TV+’s “Trying,” a heartwarming British comedy television series created by Andy Wolton (“The Amazing World of Gumball”), lands; it has its fans, and it keeps successfully chugging along, though to be fair, it does have its U.K.

The road to parenthood isn’t always a straight line, and Apple TV+‘s “Trying” portrays one of the paths that many parents take — adoption. The show has released a new trailer chronicling all the challenges that lead characters, Nikki and Jason, face on their road to adoption.

The name of Andy Wolton’s new Apple TV+ series, “Trying,” reads like a misnomer, because the whole production feels effortless: Charming, easy, light on its feet even in its most somber moments, welded together by wonderful performances from its two leads, Rafe Spall and Esther Smith. But Wolton couldn’t up and name his show “Effortless” because, among many other reasons, there’s nothing effortless about becoming a parent, whether through birth or through adoption. 

The former path is where viewers meet Wolton’s protagonists, Jason (Spall) and Nikki (Smith), a dedicated 30-something couple who’ve put in uncalculated hours attempting to conceive; the latter path is the one they end up taking when they fail, yet again, to get pregnant, and the story follows them through the rigors of the adoption process.
