A lot of people might think the era of Prestige TV began in 2013 or 2014, with the release of “House of Cards” or “True Detective.” But really, you can look at something like 2011’s “Mildred Pierce” as the start. And the people behind that limited series are teaming up yet again for a new HBO series, “Trust.”

According to Variety, Todd Haynes is set to co-write and direct a new limited series, “Trust,” starring Kate Winslet.

When Kate Winslet and HBO work together, great things happen. Just look at “Mildred Pierce” and “Mare Of Easttown” and their respective success at the Emmys for proof. So, having yet another HBO miniseries, “Trust,” on the way with Winslet in the lead is cause for celebration. But HBO just ordered another miniseries with Winslet, “The Palace,” causing subscribers to wonder what we all did to deserve such fantastic news.

When Kate Winslet teams up with HBO on a limited series, magical things happen. Or at least that’s what’s happened the last two times. Last year’s “Mare Of Easttown” and 2011’s “Mildred Pierce” both notched Winslet a pair of Emmy wins for Best Actress In A Limited Series. And they’re both excellent series beyond Winslet’s performances, which makes a potential third collab between the actress and HBO much more exciting.

There’s no getting around the fact that Danny Boyle’s “Trust“ will be evaluated in contrast to Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World“ — or that the contrast is extremely favorable to the new FX series. While the “twin films” phenomenon is prominent enough to have a well-researched and maintained Wikipedia page, what we have here is possibly the most astounding example of twin films in cinema history: two iconic auteurs coincidentally and simultaneously decide to make a film about the same true story (a television series, in Boyle’s case, although the distinction has become far less defined in recent months); the two projects go forward independently with hugely talented, big-name ensemble casts — and are eventually released within months of one another?

So, we’ve had Ridley Scott‘s version of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III in “All The Money In The World,” and it wasn’t exactly the true story account. As the film’s own credits note, there were some things changed or added for the sake of cinematic excitement. Whether or not Danny Boyle‘s TV series take will hew closer to the facts remains to be seen, but the lengthier narrative means that he can dive into the knottier complexities of these characters.

I think once people get to the end of this [season] they will find that it is thematically different.

Part of the reason why Ridley Scott and Sony have been in such a big rush to get “All The Money In The World” out next month — even if it means replacing Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer for last minute, expensive reshoots — has been to beat FX‘s “Trust.” The series from Danny Boyle tackles the exact same story as Scott’s movie, and if the first teaser is anything to go by, Sony has good reason to sweat.

We always love when two filmmakers somehow both end up racing each other to release projects about the exact same subject. We’ve had it with volcanoes, asteroids, Truman Capote and, this year, Winston Churchill, and the next battle brewing is a particularly obscure one: two rival projects about the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, the heir to the billion-dollar Getty oil fortune. It’s a fascinating story — Getty was 16 when he was kidnapped by the Mafia in Rome, at which point his grandfather refused to pay the ransom, arguing that it would make his other relatives a target, forcing his mother to battle with her estranged father-in-law for his freedom.
